Hillsboro High School wants to step up their efforts in recognizing students and staff during the second semester. Kelsi Spicer, a freshmen at HHS, will spearhead this project. Kelsi was eager to begin her first assignment of interviewing and writing about two of our senior students, Ben Rhodes and Matt Newby. Kelsi stated, “this is a great opportunity to get to know fellow students.”
Matt Newby
When you first meet someone, you think you know everything about him/her by the way they look? But, as the saying goes “don’t judge a book by its cover." Matt is a very interesting and friendly guy. And when asked very random questions, he came up with interesting answers. Matt loves General Tso’s Chicken and white rice, and if he could have an endless supply of it, that would make him very happy. When asked where he would travel to if he had the chance to go anywhere, he said he would go Europe because of the architecture. And like any male teenager, he also wants to visit Europe because of the women that live there. His ideal dream job is to be an independent carpenter. He wants to be able to make money because people like the type of furniture he makes. Three words he used to describe himself were persistent, aggressive and amusing. If Matt could be a superhero he would want to be the Punisher (even though he isn’t really considered to be a superhero). The Punisher is a normal everyday guy who goes around beating up bad guys. He was also wearing a Punisher shirt, so that may have influenced his decision. Matt’s favorite class in school is woodworking, but his favorite core class is social studies. He wants to attend the University of Rio Grande for wood working. He played football. Matt said he wasn’t the best at it, but he still liked to play. Some of Matt’s “pet peeves” are peoples’ lack of common sense and the intolerance people have for those who are different. On a more personal note, if a director would make a movie of his life, Matt said the movie would be classified as a tragedy. On the outside it looks like it’s all fun and games, but when you take a closer look at what has really happened, it is actually sad. Matt seems like a really open guy. He was really nice in the interview and seems very intelligent. He doesn’t care what people think. For example, he said his favorite color is purple—now there aren’t a lot of men who will say that, but he said he didn’t care what someone reading this would think. He is just a nice, funny guy, who among many other talents, has a passion for woodworking.
Ben Rhoades
When you think of a definition for the term “good student”, what first comes to mind? Maybe qualities such as hardworking, intelligent, kind to his/her peers, trustworthy, and able to get the job done are what you thought of. Ben Rhoades is the epitome of this definition for a good student. He is well balanced; a member of both the tennis and quick recall teams here at Hillsboro High School. Ben is a senior and is planning on attending either The Ohio State University or Princeton for college. And to all you OSU fans, his favorite sport’s team happens to be Ohio State too. He excels in math and wants to become an engineer. In his spare time Ben reads books by authors such as Dan Brown and Robert Jordan, so I guess that classifies him as a suspense/thriller and fantasy book reader. The person who came up with the idea that men can’t cook, was wrong. Ben also spends his free time cooking meals. His favorite is spaghetti. During these modern times information about you seems to be everywhere, but sometimes the silly little details count. For example, Ben’s favorite color is blue, his music listening includes classic rock, and he drives a truck. During the interview he came across as nice, intelligent yet easy to talk to, modest guy. When asked to describe himself he couldn’t quite grasp the words wanted, so he asked one of his teachers and he described Ben as conscientious and hardworking. Now you can see for yourself that Ben deserves this recognition because of his academic excellences and all around good attitude.
