HHS Career Fair met its goals

On Tuesday, March 30, more than 70 local business people were presenters at the HHS Career Fair held in the HMS gym.
The fair provided opportunities for students to speak with professionals and learn about various careers of interest. Students spent a full week during their homeroom period completing several activities in preparation for the event.
One goal of the event was to expose students to careers from all sixteen of the career clusters as defined by the federal government. Another goal was to expose students to careers that require various levels of education and/or training beyond high school.
The fair provided excellent input for students who are in the process of selecting courses for next year as well as developing their plans for beyond high school.
The event was well received by both students and business organizations,
and students completed an official evaluation of the program. When asked “What important item did you learn from attending the career fair?”
Students’ replies included the following: “I have to do better in
school.” “I now know what subjects to take.” “Wow! There are a lot of
careers.” “There are lots of options to explore.” “In counseling, you have
to ‘listen’ more than respond.” “I want to be a real estate agent.” “I
learned what I need to do to become an engineer.” “Spanish, math, and
English are very important subjects.”” All classes in school are important.”
“The future is coming quickly. Preparing early is important.” “It is
important to look at many options before I graduate.” “Almost every job
requires some type of training.” “If I am not a people person, I need to
pick a profession other than a lawyer.” “I did not know there was a job for
studying the forest.” “Funeral people have a lot more to do than you think.”
I will need math in whatever career I select.”
The event was coordinated by HHS counselors Marilyn Mathews and Larry
Wiley. Other staff members serving on the committee included: Mallory Reed,
David Binnion, and Rita Fields. Students from Mr. Cummings senior agriculture class served as student hosts for the event helping guests with parking and escorting guests to display stations.
