This spring, Greenfield fifth-graders used their creative talent to raise money for Shriners, and last week they were able to give to the organization what the auctioning of their artwork earned.

It’s the culmination of the fourth Art for a Cause where fifth grade art students at Greenfield Elementary make artwork to be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting a charitable cause of their choosing. This year that charity was Shriners and representatives of the Washington Shrine Club came to Greenfield Elementary last week.

This year, the Art for a Cause auction raised $1,653 for the organization. Added to the previous three years of Art for a Cause auctions, the total raised for various charities comes to $4,606.

According to art teacher William Roller, the fifth graders gathered in the gym and listened as Washington Shrine Club members Brian Karnes, Roger Duncan, Brad Smith, Mike Callahan, and Randy Newland shared stories of children their organization has served and are currently serving, and how the money raised by Greenfield’s fifth graders will benefit these young people.

“Art for a Cause is about doing something together for a cause bigger than ourselves, and that is just what the Shriners do, too. They work together to make a difference,” Roller said, adding that they talked about this with the students. He said the students had plenty of questions for the visitors, too, like about the work the Shriners do, how one becomes a Shriner, and what the symbols on their outfits meant.

There are always good things happening at Greenfield Elementary and across the Greenfield Exempted Village School District. The individual buildings also have Facebook pages.
