Nia Gibson of Hillsboro was named an Ohio Connections Academy (OCA) Star Student for the Month of February.
Gibson is a sixth grader at OCA and has been attending the online school since 2016. According to Gibson, she was attracted by the flexibility of the virtual classroom as it would work with her busy schedule.
“I enjoy the curriculum and how it is structured. All the subjects help reinforce the material across the curriculum,” Gibson said. “The ability to work at my own pace and have a flexible schedule allows me to participate in my activities as well as help out at home.”
Gibson said her favorite subjects are math and language arts because the lessons are interesting and fun to complete, and while the material is challenging, the teachers make it easy to learn and understand.
“I love my Ohio Connections Academy teachers,” Gibson said. “They feel like family. They are always very supportive, helpful and kind.”
Gibson said she enjoys dance, softball and volleyball. The flexibility of OCA enables her to get all of her work done, which gives her more time to enjoy those extracurricular activities.
In recognition of Gibson’s hard work and outstanding attitude toward school and her peers, her teacher, Ms. Tallet, nominated her to be one of Ohio Connections Academy’s Star Students of the Month for February.
“Nia is definitely one of the kindest students I have ever met at OCA. She is so considerate of her classmates,” Ms. Tallet said. “Every time a student is feeling nervous about presenting in my lit class, Nia is there to volunteer to help them.”
