First student in the Peace Corps program to graduate at Shawnee State University

Emily Nickell, of Piketon, is Shawnee State University's first International Service and Peace Corps Prep Program (ISPCPP) student to complete the program. The program was first offered in 2012 and SSU is one of only five universities in the United States to offer the program.

Nickell was just accepted into graduate school in a Peace Corps Masters International Program. Beginning this fall, she will attend Humboldt State University in Arcata, Calif. to pursue a master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language.

This graduate program includes tuition paid in full and a significant stipend, and will offer Nickell the chance to combine academic course work with practical field experience in a foreign country.

Now that she has been accepted to graduate school, she can submit her Peace Corps application.

If accepted into the Peace Corps, first she will complete one year of coursework at Humboldt State and then she will embark on a 27-month tour of service as a Peace Corps volunteer, teaching English as a second language in her country of assignment.
After completion of her Peace Corps service, Nickell will return to Humboldt State to finish her master's degree.

Nickell will graduate from Shawnee State University in May with a B.A. degree in International Relations and a minor in economics. During her four years at SSU, Nickell has tutored international students in English, served as an international student mentor, and taken an active role in community service as president of Rotaract, a Rotary organization for students.

She served as an Americorps volunteer for one summer, working with a community gardening project in Portsmouth. She also spent a semester studying abroad in Morocco.
