FFA members show horses at the Highland County Fair

Several members of the Hillsboro FFA Chapter showed horses at the Highland County Fair this year.

These members include freshmen Tyler Carnes and Morgan Kelly, sophomore Kenzie Lowell, junior Minnie Price, and senior Danielle Burden. Some of these members were competing with horses for the first time, but others have been competing for years.

Freshman Morgan Kelly was awarded with Versatility Grand Champion, Reserve Grand Champion in horsemanship, and Reserve Grand Champion in showmanship. She did an excellent job in her competitions.

Sophomore Kenzie Lowell made several feats, including first place in her trail class and first place in the extreme trail challenge. She also earned Grand Champion Showmanship and Outstanding Equine Exhibitor. When asked about her experience showing horses, Kenzie replied, “I love going out in the arena and doing my best with my horse Cooper…I’ll always be involved with showing horses.”

Another FFA member, senior Danielle Burden, placed first in showmanship, first in ranch horse pleasure, first in freestyle reining, and was also awarded with the title of Outstanding Equine Exhibitor.

Concerning her time showing horses, Danielle said, “I’ve been showing for about seven years. I joined 4-H and had a horseless horse project my first year. The year after I leased a horse and showed…I love the sense of camaraderie between the exhibitors. Everyone says, ‘Good luck!’ or ‘Great job!’ even if they are in a different club.”

Showing horses can be very difficult and time consuming, as horses require much care and training. All of the members did an outstanding job, and the chapter is very proud of each and every one of them.
