FFA members exhibit swine at the Highland County Fair

This year, the Hillsboro FFA chapter had nearly 18 members exhibit swine at the Highland County Fair.
The first Saturday of the fair, some members participated in the Skillathon and competed for the Outstanding Market Exhibitor (OME). Mackenzie Adams, Kennedi Claycomb, Mallory Parsons and Bryce Stanley won the OME and Skillathon for their age division.
The Swine Showmanship also took place Saturday night. Mackenzie Adams, Zane Adams, Parsons and Stanley got first in their showmanship class. Kennedi Claycomb, Regan Claycomb, Lana Grover, Lauren Grover, Kaleb Harp and Kirsten Harp got second, third and fourth in their showmanship class.

On Tuesday night, the junior fair show took place. Lauren Grover won the Reserve Grand Champion Market Barrow for her last year showing in the Junior Fair Show. Parsons was the Grand Champion light weight barrow for her division. Kennedi Claycomb, Regan Claycomb, Aaron Miller, Lana Grover and Jordan Williamson won first in their class. Mackenzie Adams, Zane Adams, Regan Claycomb and Joe Helterbrand got second and third in their class.
At the conclusion of the show Tuesday night, all extra hogs were loaded out and sold for market price. Each member then sold one market hog Wednesday night at the fairgrounds.
“It was my first year, and I am glad I got to experience it,” Heather Burba said.
Members Abby Brown, Taryn Magulac, Natalie Sullivan and Nathan Sexton kept their hogs in the Hillsboro FFA barn located at the high school. These kids were courteous enough to let ag classes go down to the barn practice and learn about hogs. Kids were able to learn the anatomy of a hog, how to judge and practice their showmanship skills.
