EveryLibrary urges Senate to reject S. 4925, warning bill could expand book banning in America's schools
EveryLibrary, the national political action committee for libraries, stands in opposition to S. 4925, warning that the legislation could significantly expand book banning efforts in schools by encouraging the removal of books and educational materials through broad federal restrictions.
EveryLibrary argues that while protecting children is an important goal, S. 4925 would create powerful incentives for schools to restrict access to books and educational resources rather than risk losing federal funding.
"Students deserve access to professionally curated school library collections that support learning, literacy, and critical thinking," said John Chrastka, Executive Director of EveryLibrary. "This legislation moves our country in the wrong direction by creating conditions that could encourage censorship instead of education. School libraries should help students explore ideas, not limit them."
EveryLibrary believes school librarians and educators are best positioned to make decisions about library collections through established review policies and professional standards. The organization warns that broad federal mandates affecting library materials could have a chilling effect on schools, leading to the removal of books that have long served students and educators.
"The right to access school libraries is fundamental to education and democracy," Chrastka added. "When lawmakers create incentives to remove books instead of supporting literacy, every student loses. Young people need opportunities to encounter diverse ideas, develop critical thinking skills, and prepare for participation in a democratic society."
EveryLibrary is calling on the Senate to vote against S. 4925 and instead support policies that strengthen school libraries, expand access to books, invest in literacy, and protect students' right to learn.
The organization is encouraging library supporters, educators, parents, students, authors, and advocates across the country to contact their Senators and speak out against the bill.
