The Bright Local Board of Education re-hired Ted Downing as superintendent, effective Aug. 1.
As previously reported in The Highland County Press, Downing resigned at the June 25 regular board meeting “for the purpose of retirement.” Whiteoak High School principal Brian Ruckel began serving as interim superintendent effective June 30.
According to a Bright Local board member, Downing was rehired exactly one month after his announced retirement. He was renamed superintendent at a special meeting July 25, which was scheduled to discuss a proposed levy for the district. Downing was hired for the same salary of $85,125.53, according to a board member.
Downing was initially hired by the board March 30, 2015 to begin as superintendent effective Aug. 1, 2015, succeeding former superintendent Dee Wright and former interim superintendent Terry Fouch.
Other requests to the Bright Local Board of Education for comment have not been returned.
