Buerkle, Humphries earn Lions Club scholarships

The Hillsboro Lions Club recently awarded two $500 scholarships to seniors Bryanna Buerkle and Jonah Humphries of Hillsboro.
This is money being returned to the community from the club’s annual candy sales.
Buerkle has been attending classes at Southern State Community College as part of the College Credit Plus (CCP) program since the start of her junior year. She has been attending college full-time as well as working full-time. She plans to attend SSCC in the fall to complete the four classes needed to earn her associate’s degree in science.

Buerkle’s leadership roles in high school include serving as the National Honor Society reporter, the Hillsboro FFA reporter and vice president and a counselor for Project Trust. She earned the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Award as a sophomore and has also participated in the Rotary Club 4-Way Speech Contest three times, coming in second twice and winning once. As a senior, Buerkle was selected to represent Hillsboro City Schools on the Board of Education as the student representative.
After earning her associate’s degree in science, Buerkle plans to enter the nursing program at SSCC, then transfer to Wright State University to earn her BSN. Her goal is to become a neonatal nurse practitioner and work at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.
Humphries is involved in many community service projects, including being an active member of the youth group at St. Mary Catholic Church. As a member of the youth group, Humphries does yard work in the Hillsboro community, assists at fish fries and visits patients at the Laurels. He also fulfills other duties at the church, including being an altar server and minister of communion.
For four years, Humphries has volunteered at KAMP Dovetail, a volunteer-run camp for children with disabilities. He hopes to continue volunteering there throughout his college education.
Humphries also serves as a teacher’s aide in biology and general science at the Dayton Homeschool Co-op Group, where he says he helps students understand science through exciting lab experiments.
Humphries plans to attend Coastal Carolina University to pursue a career in physical therapy. Humphries said that he plans to pay for his own tuition because he believes he needs to earn his degree and pay for it himself.
