Buckner-Smalley chosen by SSCC faculty for Ladrach Scholarship

 

                Southern State Community College student Lori Buckner-Smalley of Wilmington was named as the 2010 recipient of the Dr. Samuel N. Ladrach Memorial Endowed Fund scholarship. This $500 scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding student, selected by faculty, who epitomizes the spirit of the college and Dr. Samuel N. Ladrach.

                Charles Gorman, assistant professor of human and social services, presented the award to Buckner-Smalley during the June 11 commencement exercises at Southern State.

                “Sam was always known for taking students under his wing, to help them along their way in their difficult times,” said Gorman. “It would always seem to be a student with lots of potential, dedication and perseverance, because along with all of that came an equal amount of barriers and struggles in their lives, and Sam would be there. This year’s recipient is such a person.”

                Buckner-Smalley was nominated by Dr. Robert Headley, professor of English at Southern State.

                “Lori has been an outstanding student even though she has much to overcome,” wrote Dr. Headley. “Her work is always excellent.”

                According to the scholarship statement, the late Dr. Samuel “Sam” Ladrach, a former psychology professor at Southern State—along with his late wife, Jeff Ladrach, a former medical assisting instructor—promoted endeavors that positively impacted students as well as the college. A scholarship was established in honor of his love for his profession and the college. This endowment secures Dr. Ladrach’s lifelong wish of promoting quality education. Understanding that the college has a vital role in the community, the Ladrach family decided this endowment would be a way to assist area students for years to come.

“Dr. Ladrach was a pillar on which the college grew and developed through the years,” the statement reads. “His devotion will remain constant through the use of these endowed funds.”
