Bright Local Schools has recently been awarded the Learn and Serve Ohio grant in the amount of $15,000. This is the fifth year to receive this grant, which continues to provide funding to collaborate school curriculum with community needs. The Sugar Tree Area Resource (S.T.A.R.) Lab has been one of the big projects for this program, along with the PALS program, community lunches, computer basics courses, culture fair, community tea, and many other projects. The funding also allots for college and career visits, guests speakers, and equipment to support programs. A new Service Learning course at Whiteoak High School has been offered for our juniors and seniors and is being taught by Mr. Brian DeAltey and Mrs. Kara Juillerat. This course has many goals. 1) Offer our students the opportunity to use newly acquired academic knowledge and skills in real life settings. 2) Provide students with structured time to think talk, write, and reflect in ways they saw, did, and felt during their service experience. 3) Enhance and enrich what is being taught in the classroom by extending student learning beyond the classroom into the community. 4) Foster the development of a sense of civic responsibility and caring for self and others. Each week time is dedicated for Seniors to work with a site based business organization to gain experience in their career choice(s) and juniors will assist elementary teachers in their classrooms. If you would like to work with our juniors and seniors to reach the needs in our community, please contact Mrs. Juillerat or Mr. DeAtley at (937) 442-2241 ext 1434 or ext. 1329.[[In-content Ad]]
