Zane Trace wins over host Whiteoak Lady ’Cats

MOWRYSTOWN — As closely played as the first half was for the host Whiteoak Lady Wildcats and Zane Trace Lady Pioneers with both teams looking for their first win of the season, the third quarter proved to be too much for the Lady ’Cats, as ZTHS opened the frame with a 14-0 run to eventually defeat Whiteoak, 52-34.
The Friday night win for Zane Trace was their first win of the season, as they used not only the 14 straight points scored in the third frame, but for the entire quarter they outscored WHS, 18-5 as their halftime lead went from 20-19 to 38-24 by the time the third frame ended.

Zane Trace (1-10) opened the third with a 3-pointer from Lauren Lane 14 seconds into the quarter, and from there another two points were scored off a steal and layup. Lane sank another 3-pointer at the 7:10 mark for a 28-19 lead, giving them eight points in the first 50 seconds of the quarter. Lane led all scorers with 24 points as she made seven two-point field goals, two 3-pointers and was 2-of-6 from the free-throw line.
From there, the Lady Pioneers had three more points from Lane, followed by a free throw by Alexis Guffey. The run was capped off with another two points from ZTHS for a 34-19 lead over WHS with 3:53 left in the third frame.
As ZTHS scored points in the run, the Lady Wildcats struggled with turnovers and missed shot chances. The Lady ’Cats stopped the scoring run with a jumper off her own rebound by Hailey Monteith at the 3:02 mark. ZT answered with a layup off a fast break by Kyrston O’Neill. WHS came back with two points by Cylee Bratton at the 1:50 mark, but the frame eventually ended with a jumper by Lane for what turned into a 14-point deficit for WHS at 38-24. Bratton led WHS in scoring with 15 points as she finished with five two-point field goals and five made free throws.
In the fourth, the Lady Pioneers outscored Whiteoak 14-10 with points from Hannah Kerr, Lane, Guffey, Laynee Hill, Erin Nelson, Emily Allen and Mari Silva. The fourth-quarter points came from Sky Leston, Kara Ward, Monteith and Bratton. Ward finished the game with seven points.

Whiteoak scored 14 points in the second frame, tying the score at 12-12 with a layup by Bratton with 3:55 left in the second quarter. WHS later took the lead off two free throws by Monteith at the 2:50 mark of the second, only to see Lane tie the score at 16 off a free throw make.
Whiteoak’s Sky Leston pushed the Lady ’Cats back in front with a free-throw conversion with 2:28 left in the first half. ZT ended the first half with two jumpers by Gabie Hamm, while WHS had a turnaround jumper by Bratton. Hamm ended the game with five total points.
