Wildcats win 2 weekend games; earn 3rd straight win

The Whiteoak Wildcats won two games over the weekend and have won their past three games, defeating Portsmouth Notre Dame at home on Saturday and Manchester on the road Friday night. Last week, the Wildcats defeated Bethel-Tate at home, which began the three-game winning streak.
On Saturday (Jan. 6), the Wildcats defeated Notre Dame by a 68-40 score in non-conference play.
WHS started off strong by having the lead at the end of the first quarter at 14-11, but in the second they flexed their muscle by winning the frame at 12-2 for a halftime advantage of 26-13.

In the third frame, the Wildcats outscored their non-conference foe Notre Dame 20-10 for a lead of 46-23 after three frames. In the fourth, WHS scored 22 points and Notre Dame added 17 points for what was a 28-point win by Whiteoak.
Whiteoak had two players score in double figures with Zach Rand leading the way with 16 points, five rebounds and one block. Rand totaled four two-point baskets, one 3-pointer and he was 5-of-6 from the free-throw line.
Stephen Ross followed with 13 points, one rebound and three assists. Ross finished the game with five two-point field goals, two 3-pointers and was 3-of-4 from the free-throw line.
Also scoring points for the Wildcats was Traeten Hamilton with nine points (five assists), followed by Trever Yeager and Charley Skinner (two steals) with seven points each. Atlee Carr finished with five points, Brayden Yeager scored four points (five rebounds), Clay Risner totaled three points and with two points each were Josh Hughes and Ryan Roberts.
“We are on a three-game winning streak, and the boys are playing at a high level right now and with a lot of confidence,” WHS head coach Blake Kibler said. “The big thing now is keeping our confidence and keeping us moving in the right direction right into North Adams Tuesday. We can beat anybody on any given night, we just have to play our game and play intense defense.”
On Friday night (Jan. 5), the Wildcats won a Southern Hills Athletic Conference game over the host Manchester Greyhounds by a 68-54 score. In what was then their second straight win, the Wildcats led by one point after the first frame at 14-13.
From there in the second quarter, the Greyhounds scored 21 points, while WHS had just 12 points in the quarter, resulting in the visitors trailing at halftime by a 34-26 score. When the second half began, the Wildcats gained the momentum over their conference foe, outscoring Manchester 24-8 in the third. Added with an 18-12 fourth frame in favor of WHS, that led to a 14-point victory.
The Wildcats had three players score in double figures with Trever Yeager leading the way with 17 points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals. Yeager made seven two-point baskets and was 3-of-4 from the free-throw line.

Even after trailing by a 16-10 score in the first frame, WHS came back with a 15-6 second quarter for a 25-22 lead after two frames. WHS was outscored 9-4 in the third frame, but in the fourth the home team rallied back with a 17-12 quarter for the win.
