Wildcats battle to the end in sectional final loss to New Boston

Going for the upset in the Division IV sectional semifinals on Tuesday night, the Whiteoak Wildcats nearly accomplished the feat against the No. 2 seeded Glenwood New Boston Tigers, losing by just three points at 43-40 at Northwest High School.
The Wildcats — who finish the season at 8-15 overall — went toe-to-toe with New Boston, as they got to within one point of tying the score late in the fourth quarter, and they held the lead at halftime.
Getting to all of those close moments, the Wildcats led 11-9 at the end of the first frame with their 11 points coming from three players.

Those players with the 11 first-quarter points included Landon Barnett with five, as he made a 3-pointer and two-point basket. Josh Hughes chipped in with four points, and Carson Emery scored two points in the opening frame.
WHS won the second frame as well with a 10-9 effort for a halftime lead of 21-18.
Whiteoak’s 10-point second frame consisted of two baskets by Nick Bailey for four points, and also with two buckets for four points was Brayden Yeager. Adding one basket for two points was Hughes.
Following the halftime break, the Wildcats were outscored 14-8 in the third, leading to them trailing by a 32-29 score after three complete quarters.
Whiteoak’s third frame included four points by Hughes off two baskets, two points by Bailey from the free-throw line and one basket for two points by Emery.
Both New Boston and Whiteoak each scored 11 points in the fourth quarter. Bailey made three free throws on four attempts, while Emery went 2-of-2 from the free-throw line in the frame.
The fourth quarter also saw Barnett sink a 3-pointer and Hughes score two points off a bucket.
Hughes led WHS with 12 points in the sectional final loss, while Bailey followed with a final total of nine points. Barnett totaled eight points for Whiteoak.
Rounding out the final WHS scoring were Emery with six points and Yeager with five.
As a team, the Wildcats totaled 13 two-point baskets, two 3-pointers and they were 8-of-10 from the free-throw line.
New Boston totaled 14 two-point baskets as a team, four 3-pointers and they were 3-of-9 from the free-throw line. They were led in scoring by Chase Clark with 13 points, as he scored seven of them in the fourth quarter, including a 3-pointer.
Also in double-figure scoring for New Boston was Kyle Sexton with 10 points.
The rest of the New Boston scoring included six points by Tanner Voiers and five points each by Devon Jones and Marcus Saunders. They also had two points each by Malachi Potts and Jerome McKinley.
New Boston will next face the Fairfield Lions on Tuesday, March 4 at the Ohio University Convocation Center at 6:15 p.m.
