Whiteoak wins in OT over Paint Valley; advances to sectional finals

The young Whiteoak Wildcats grew a bit older on Tuesday night as the team battled tough and won in overtime in the Division IV SE District Sectional Semifinals, defeating the Paint Valley Bearcats, 65-59 at Northwest High School.
Whiteoak (9-14) gained the win by holding tough and fending off strong charges by the Bearcats, as WHS already had played in games where they lost by very close margins late this season. This time around in the “second season,” the closely played game went in favor of the battle-tested Whiteoak squad.

WHS (a No. 15 seed) and the No. 18 seeded Paint Valley team went into overtime following the Wildcats tying the game at 58 with a 3-pointer late in the fourth frame. In overtime, the Wildcats outscored the Bearcats, 7-1, with all seven points by the Wildcats coming from the free-throw line.
In those foul shots, Nick Bailey was 5-of-6 from the free-throw line in overtime, and Landon Barnett was 2-of-2 in his two OT free-throw attempts, which helped send the Wildcats to victory.
For the game, Bailey led the Wildcats with 18 points, finishing the game with not only the clutch shooting from the free-throw line in OT, but he also totaled six two-point baskets and was 6-of-8 overall from the charity stripe. Bailey scored two points in the first quarter, then after three made baskets in the second, he added three points in the third and one more made basket in the fourth frame.
Carson Emery followed with 15 points, as he made six two-point baskets and a 3-pointer. Emery knocked down four points in the first quarter off two baskets, then added six points in the second with three made buckets. He then added a two-point basket in the third and in the fourth frame sank a 3-pointer.
Whiteoak had two more players finish in double-figure scoring, and that included Barnett with 14 points in the win for the Wildcats, as the freshman collected six two-point baskets and was 2-of-4 from the free-throw line. Barnett scored two points in the first frame, then added two more points in the second quarter. In the third and fourth frames, Barnett sank two baskets in each quarter, then added the two clutch free throws in OT.
Bradley Ashbaugh also ended the game with double-figure scoring, totaling 12 points in the WHS sectional final win. Ashbaugh made two two-point baskets, with one in the second and one coming in the fourth quarter. He also made two 3-pointers, also with those coming with a make in the second and fourth quarters each, plus in the third Ashbaugh was 2-of-2 from the free-throw line.
The WHS scoring for the game was rounded out by Josh Hughes with six points as he made one basket each in the first, third and fourth quarters. For the game, as a team the Wildcats totaled 23 two-point baskets, three 3-pointers and they were 10-of-14 from the free-throw line.
As for how the game went for both squads, the Wildcats trailed 15-10 at the end of the first quarter with Bailey, Barnett and Hughes each scoring two points in the opening quarter, while Emery made two baskets for four points.
On the other side, in the 15-point first frame Paint Valley had four points each from Cordell Grubb and Bryce Newland, plus Cruz McFadden made a 3-pointer, while Jackson Williams and Trent Mettler each scored two points in the opening eight minutes played.
Paint Valley added 15 more points to their side of the scoreboard with Grubb adding another four points off two baskets, plus Williams made another two-point bucket as well. McFadden equaled his first-quarter feat as well with another 3-pointer, while Cole Miller added three points to the PVHS scoring, too. Not to be outdone, teammate Newland made a 3-pointer as well in the second quarter.
Whiteoak had their highest-scoring quarter of the game in the second frame with Bailey and Emery each scoring six points as both player connected three times from the field, plus Ashbaugh added five points with a 3-pointer and two-point basket. Also in the second, Barnett sank a two-point basket, which all led to PV being in the lead at halftime but a 30-29 score.
WHS held the lead after three frames at 42-40 due to outscoring the Bearcats, 13-10 in the third. The Wildcats had four points off two baskets by Barnett in the third, while Bailey scored three points in the frame as well, Ashbaugh totaled two points in the third, and both Emery and Hughes each scored two points.
Paint Valley had eight of their 10 points in the third from Newland from four made baskets, while McFadden tallied two points in the frame.
The Bearcats outscored the Wildcats, 18-16 in the fourth quarter where the game saw both teams hold the lead in the quarter, only to see it go into overtime. WHS in the fourth had five points by Ashbaugh off a 3-pointer and two-point basket, while Bailey had a two-point bucket. Emery also sank a 3-pointer in the fourth, while Barnett scored four points off two made baskets and Hughes scored two points.
Paint Valley’s fourth quarter included seven points from Newland (including a 3-pointer), plus six points by Grubb, a 3-pointer by Mettler and two points from McFadden.
Newland led the Bearcats with 22 points in the sectional semifinal game, totaling eight two-point baskets and two 3-pointers. Grubb finished with 15 points, as he collected seven baskets and was 1-of-3 from the free-throw line. McFadden chipped in with 10 points by sinking two 3-pointers and two two-point field goals.
Also for the Bearcats, Williams finished with four points, Mettler had five points and Miller totaled three points.
As a team, PVHS totaled 21 two-point baskets, five 3-pointers and were 2-of-5 from the free-throw line.
The Wildcats will play again on Tuesday, Feb. 25 back at Northwest High School, as they will face No. 2 seeded Glenwood New Boston at 8 p.m. During the regular season, New Boston defeated WHS, 58-50 on Dec. 14.
