Whiteoak Wildcats Track & Field Preview
The Whiteoak Wildcats boys and girls are set to begin their 2016 track and field season under first-year WHS head coach Danielle Combs, as they look to compete in the Southern Hills Athletic Conference.
WHS enters the season with seniors Josh Bowman and returning on the girls side of the team is Kayla Taylor.
Others who can stand out this season for WHS are Division III state qualifier junior Derrick Ison, along with regional qualifier junior Taylor Tackett, as she’s working to take the next step as well this season.
“Returning state competitor junior Derrick Ison hopes to return to the state meet, breaking the 50-second barrier in the 4,000-meter dash and placing among the top in the state,” Combs said. “He has great potential, and I hope his teammates compete alongside him.

“Returning regional competitor Taylor Tackett hopes to qualify for the state meet, breaking the 13-second barrier in the 100m dash, and I definitely can see Taylor improving her times. All the athletes on both the boys and girls teams have worked hard in training for all their events in hopes that their performances will keep improving.”
This season is about the Wildcats track teams improving from last season, building better times as the spring progresses.
“I hope that the athletes perform their best and that they get those personal bests during tournament time with them having given their all to finish the season,” Combs said. “As a coach, I would like to see every athlete break their own personal bests and place on a regular basis.
“I really hope that they also grow to love and become passionate about track and field and spread that passion on. I can't wait to see how the program grows in the future.”
WHS opens their 2016 season on Tuesday, March 29 at West Union, then on Wednesday, March 30, WHS will compete at Georgetown.
They will compete four times this regular season in Highland County, including April 5 at McClain, April 7 at Lynchburg-Clay, April 26 at McClain and May 7 at Lynchburg-Clay. The SHAC Meet is also in Highland County this year, at LCHS on May 13.
