Whiteoak top-placing Ohio team, 3rd overall at Rio Grande Invitational

Whiteoak traveled to the University of Rio Grande on Saturday, Sept. 25 to take part in the 50th anniversary Rio Grande Invitational.
Whiteoak boys took third place out of 22 teams. Landen Eyre took fourth place overall out of 211 runners with a time of 17:01. Weston Blair finished 13th with a 17:42. Christian Price was 31st at 18:51.
Other finishers for WHS included Wade Evans 57th at 19:42, Connor Butler 97th at 20:49, Tristen Helterbrand 98th 20:52, Robbie Raines 120th 21:39, Austin Richards 178th 24:21 and Jake Ward 181 24:26.
Coach Doug Hughes was elated again with his team’s performance.
“Our kids came to this huge meet on a collegiate campus and course and really ran great,” Hughes said. “The top end competition of this race was loaded with top teams around but also the No. 3 team in the state of West Virginia and other good schools from West Virginia and Kentucky.
“Christian Price was huge for us, holding on for a very strong three-man today. Everyone is doing what they should be, and we are getting better and better.
“I want to give a shoutout to Jake Ward, as last year he was running from 31-33 minutes per race, and his hard work has him clear down into the 24s,” Hughes continued. “That’s what this sport is all about. It’s tough. It’s grueling. The easiest thing in the world would be to not do this sport. Our kids are all in and prepping hard to peak in 5 weeks. We are trying to get a little better every day.”
