Whiteoak Lady Wildcats gain 1st win of season

For the first time in nearly two years, the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats left the court with a victory Saturday, and they did so by defeating the Sciotoville East Lady Tartans by a 27-24 score at Whiteoak High School in front of their home fans.
Neither team was able to get their scoring going in the first frame, as Whiteoak led by a 1-0 score after the opening eight minutes of action. Brooklynne Campbell scored the lone point of the first quarter with a free-throw conversion.
At halftime, East led by a 5-4 score, with the visitors having a 3-pointer from Kacie Conley and a two-point bucket from Mia Caldwell. Whiteoak’s three points in the second came from the free-throw line, as Kara Ward made two free-throw attempts and Cylee Bratton sank one free-throw basket.

In the third, Whiteoak made their first field goals of the game, breaking out for nine points in the quarter, but lost the frame at 10-9 as East took a 15-13 lead in the quarter.
For WHS (1-12) in the third, seven of their nine points were scored by Bratton as the senior made a 3-pointer, a two-point basket and two free throws. Brie Walker added two points to the WHS scoring as well in the third.
East’s third frame consisted of four points from Grace Smith and two points each by Peyton Jackson, Felicia Smith, and Conley. Grace Smith led East with six points.
Then came the biggest quarter of the season thus far for WHS with the Lady Wildcats leading the frame 14-9, and in the process, winning the game by three points. In the fourth and final quarter, Whiteoak had five points from Bratton, five points from Kayla Jones and two points each from Walker and Ward.
East had three points from Betty Osbourne and two points each by Johnson, Shayla Rosenogle and Smith in the fourth.
The win by Whiteoak snapped a 45-game losing streak. The most recent win before Saturday was on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018 on the road against Silver Grove, Ky. by a 48-38 score.
Bratton led WHS with 13 points for the game Saturday as she totaled three two-point baskets, one 3-pointer and she was 4-of-8 from the free-throw line.
For the game, Sciotoville East made six two-point baskets, two 3-pointers and they were 6-of-10 from the free-throw line. WHS finished with seven two-point baskets, one 3-pointer and they went 10-of-20 from the free-throw line.
Next for Whiteoak is a game at Manchester on Monday, Jan. 6 in a Southern Hills Athletic Conference showdown.
