Whiteoak Lady ’Cats fall to Sciotoville East in close contest

MOWRYSTOWN – The Whiteoak Lady Wildcats came close to gaining their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon but were unable to keep their lead in the fourth quarter, falling to the Sciotoville East Lady Tartans, 30-26 at Whiteoak High School.
The non-conference loss by the Lady ’Cats was the first win of the season for East, with the game being closely played throughout all four quarters, as the score was tied on four occasions in the first three quarters.
Whiteoak was led in scoring by Cylee Bratton with 17 points in the game. Bratton totaled two two-point baskets, two 3-pointers and was 7-of-10 from the free-throw line. Next in scoring for WHS were Kayla Jones with four points, Liz Edwards with four points and Bailey Monteith with one point.

East was led by Grace Smith with 13 points in their win.
“We had too many unforced turnovers and too many offensive rebounds for East,” WHS head coach Steve Smith said. “We gave up too many second and third shots, and you can’t do that.
“Cylee had a really nice ball game with 17 points. I thought we did a lot of things good, a lot of things good, but it came back to too many unforced turnovers. That was the biggest thing. We just have to keep working on that.”
As for the first frame, a combined 10 points were scored as Whiteoak led 6-4 at the conclusion of the first eight minutes of action. East scored first with a basket in the paint from Felicia Smith, but that was answered with a free throw conversion by Bratton. Next, East added to their lead with a layup as Grace Smith took the ball the length of the court for two points. Bratton came back strong with a 3-pointer, and the Lady ’Cats ended the first with a layup by Edwards with 2:10 on the clock.
The one-point lead turned into two points following Monteith sinking a free throw in the early stages of the second frame. East answered with four straight points to take a lead of 8-7 with 4:48 left in the second, WHS took back the advantage with a basket by Bratton. Again, the lead changed hands with a jumper from East’s Peyton Johnson.
WHS regained the lead with a wide-open 3-pointer by Bratton with 2:20 left on the clock in the second quarter, but the Tartans tied the score at 12-12 with 1:06 on remaining in the first half for a halftime score of 12-12.
East began the third with baskets by Ali Escamilla and Grace Smith for a 15-12 lead, but WHS came back with four straight points off two buckets from Jones to put WHS back in front by a 16-15 lead with 4:43 left in the third.
Again, the score was all tied at 16 off a free-throw conversion from East’s Shayla Rosenogle. East took the lead with 2:52 left in the quarter as Grace Smith stole the ball and took it to the hoop on a fast break for a 18-16 lead.
WHS managed to tie the score at 18 off two free throws from Bratton and took the lead with 32 seconds left in the third off a layup from Edwards for a 20-18 lead.
Following a 3-pointer at the 6:16 of the fourth from Escamilla to regain the lead for East at 21-20, the Lady ’Cats were unable to get back in front for the rest of the game, as they were outscored 12-6 in the fourth for a four-point loss at 30-26.
Scoring all six points for WHS in the fourth was Bratton.
Final total scoring for East also included Peyton Johnson with six points, Rosenogle with four points, Felicia Smith with two points and Escamilla with five points. For the game, East totaled one 3-pointer (Escamilla in the fourth quarter) and were 5-of-14 from the free-throw line.
