Whiteoak drops home game to Ripley, 55-49

The Whiteoak Wildcats hosted the Ripley Blue Jays Friday, Jan. 25 and lost in a close game, 55-49.
The Wildcats were led by Zach Rand and Hunter Ruckel with 19 and 18 points, respectively.
Ripley-Union-Lewis-Huntington was led by Jaki Royal and Landon Dearing with 29 and eight points, respectively.
Also scoring for the Wildcats were Bradley Ashbaugh with six points, Brayden Yeager with four points and Ryan Roberts with two.
Scoring for the Ripley Blue Jays were Peyton Fyffe with seven points, T.K. Whaley with five points, Nigel Royal with four points and Corey Germann with two points.
The Blue Jays opened up the first quarter with a three-point basket by Fyffe. While in a full-court press, the Blue Jays forced a turnover after Fyffe’s basket. Jaki Royal stole the ball and scored his first two points of the game. Fyffe scored all seven of his points in the first quarter. Nigel Royal scored his only two points in the first quarter.
Ruckel scored first for the Wildcats with a two-point floater. Ruckel also shot 50 percent from the free-throw line in the quarter. Rand led the Wildcats in points in the first quarter with four, including two that came off an assist by Yeager.
The Wildcats switched to a press in the second quarter, forcing three turnovers by the Bluejays on their first five possessions. This helped the Wildcats take their first lead of the game by the end of the quarter. The Blue Jays were held to only three points in the second quarter.
Yeager and Roberts each scored two points in the second quarter. Rand scored five in the second, three from the free-throw line. Late in the quarter, Ashbaugh made the first of his two three-point baskets. This gave the Wildcats a 19-18 point lead at halftime.
The Blue Jays came out of the half firing on all cylinders. Jaki Royal and Dearing scored two points each in the first minute of the third quarter. Dearing scored another four points before the end of the third. Jaki Royal made two 3-pointers in the third, along with another two point basket and three made free throws, giving him 12 points for the quarter.
Ruckel and Rand responded to the Blue Jays' early success, scoring four points to keep a one-point lead at the 5:36 mark. A run of four turnovers in four possessions hurt the Wildcats’ offensive flow, though.
In the last minute and a half of the third, the Wildcats scored nine points. Ruckel drained a long jump shot for two points. Ashbaugh made his second 3-pointer of the game at the one-minute mark. Rand scored four points in the last 12 seconds of the quarter, two from the free-throw line after time had expired.
The fourth quarter began with six straight points by the Blue Jays, Germann, Whaley and Dearing with two apiece.
A three-point basket by Ruckel helped keep Whiteoak’s chance’s alive. Four points by Rand brought the Wildcats within two points, but the Blue Jays went on a five-point run to pull ahead comfortably. Jaki Royal scored the last seven points of the game for the Blue Jays.
Yeager scored two more points at the 3:12 mark in the fourth. The last eight points of the game scored by Whiteoak came from Ruckel, who made two more three-point baskets before the end of the quarter.
