On Saturday (Sept.18) at Southeastern High School, the Whiteoak Wildcats led the way in winning in the 12-team field. Whiteoak edged Westfall by a single spot to take home the championship trophy in the cross-country event.

Leading the way for Whiteoak and the entire race was freshman Landen Eyre. Eyre clocked a tremendous 17:01 on the hot and challenging course to claim victory over the field of 134 runners.

Whiteoak’s depth brought home the win as sophomore Weston Blair was fourth (17:52), Christian Price 12th (19:34), Bryce Van Hoy 19th (20:12), Wade Evans 23rd (20:25), Connor Butler 32nd (20:56) and Tristen Helterbrand 35th (21:07).

Rounding out the results for team Whiteoak were Tyler Wessner 58th (22:53), Jake Ward 89th (25:25) and Austin Richards 111th (29:04).

Coach Doug Hughes was very pleased with the performance of his team.

“For a freshman to come in and win a huge invitational is incredible. Landen Eyre has worked relentlessly to get to where he is and I’m very happy for him, but having Weston Blair up at the top as well in fourth place is a difference maker.

“Weston has worked so hard and keeps getting better and better. Our depth with our 3-7 men is big. Having three runners in the top 10 percent of the race and seven kids in the top 25 percent of the race allows us to score well at these big meets. It is a process for sure, but today was a great day for Whiteoak cross-country.”
