Whiteoak baseball opens season with 2 losses to Jeeps

The 2017 baseball season opened for the Whiteoak Wildcats Saturday with two non-conference losses to the visiting South Webster Jeeps in their doubleheader at Whiteoak.
The Wildcats lost by scores of 5-0 and 12-1 to the Jeeps, with the first game of the twin bill seeing the Wildcats gain two hits, while allowing six hits in the game.
“We gave up 16 freebies and 10 unearned runs, and that tells the story in game two,” WHS head coach Chris Veidt said. “It was very disappointing, because that wasn't us.

“Game one, we saw one of the top pitchers in the district and lost, simple as that. Although I believe we have seen a few kids his equal in scrimmages and handled them better.”
For WHS, their hits came from Traeten Hamilton and Zach Harless, who each went 1-for-3 in game one. Harless gained the first hit of the season for the Wildcats in the bottom of the first inning on a one-out base hit past the South Webster shortstop on a 2-2 count. He also stole second and third bases but was left stranded following a strikeout and fly ball hit to centerfield.
Hamilton’s hit came in the bottom of the third with two outs, as he singled to centerfield with a 2-1 count.
Also for the Wildcats, Ryan Roberts drew a full-count walk with one out.
The pitching loss was charged to Hamilton. In his first start of the season, the Wildcat pitcher went five innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits and five walks. He finished with four strikeouts. Harless pitched two innings of relief, allowing no runs or hits, but did walk one and had one strikeout.
As for the South Webster scoring, they scored two runs in the second, one in the third and two more in the fourth inning.
In game two, the Wildcats scored their lone run in the second inning. As for hits, Harless and Brandon Lowe each had one hit, with Lowe hitting a double.
WHS used three pitchers in the second game, with Chase Butler being charged with the loss. He pitched 2.2 innings. He allowed eight runs, but just two were earned. Butler walked two and had one strikeout. Pitching in relief were Brayden Yeager and Evan Brill.
Yeager went three innings of relief, where he allowed four runs (none earned) on no hits and one walk. Brill pitched one-third of an inning, allowing no runs on one walk and one strikeout.
The Jeeps scored their runs in game two with three in the first, four in the third and five in the sixth inning.
Next for the Wildcats is a non-conference game on Monday, March 27 vs. the Paint Valley Bearcats at 5 p.m. On Tuesday, March 28, the Wildcats will face the Peebles Indians in Southern Hills Athletic Conference action at 5 p.m.
