UPDATED: Whiteoak claims sectional title, improves to 24-1

MOWRYSTOWN – The No. 1-ranked Whiteoak Wildcats improve to 24-1 on the season and claimed the Division IV sectional title with a 10-0 win over the Peebles Indians Tuesday, May 8.
Starter Evan Brill fired a complete-game shutout, while recording six strikeouts for the Wildcats.
Peebles’ Stephen Penn also had six strikeouts, before being replaced by Ridge Cluxton in the fifth inning.
Brill and Penn pitched scoreless first and second innings for their respective teams. In the third inning, the Wildcats erupted for four runs.
Back-to-back walks to Chase Butler and Ryan Roberts set up Traeten Hamilton for the RBI opportunity. He delivered with a two-run double. Hamilton later scored after a stolen base and a fielder’s choice by teammate Chase Carraher. Carraher also stroked a double later in the game.
In the same inning, the bases were loaded for designated-hitter Casey Nace, who hit a line-drive single to bring in the fourth and final run of the inning, bringing home Caleb West.
Meanwhile, Brill pitched a solid game, allowing a total of four base runners in five scoreless innings.
After Penn gave up a single to Mason Lehr, Peebles Coach Kenny Dick pulled his starter.
Whiteoak Coach Chris Veidt countered by pinch-running Joey Oliver for Lehr.
Oliver stole two bases and scored on a single by Trever Yeager.
After a walk to Nace and a pair of stolen bases for Yeager, Butler drove in two more runs. Roberts then tripled to drive in Butler. Hamilton drove in Roberts with a sacrifice fly for the ninth run of the game. Carraher was the last man to cross the plate in the inning for the 10th and final run on a throwing error to first after a base-hit single and a stolen base.
“We’re going to take it one pitch at a time,” Veidt said after the game. “We’re going to try to win seven straight, and we’ve gotten one down so far.”
Whiteoak (24-1) advances to the district semifinals on May 15 at the VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe versus either Racine Southern or Belpre.
