Tigers defeat Whiteoak with strong defensive effort

The McClain Tigers used some solid defense and balanced offense to defeat visiting Whiteoak 64-40 Tuesday night in a game they led from start to finish.
McClain jumped out to an early 10-0 advantage, due mainly to some aggressive defense forcing the Whiteoak Wildcats into several turnovers, which resulted into some easy baskets.
“I’m satisfied with our effort tonight,” McClain head coach Joe B. Stewart said. “Their trips were long, and our defense forced them offensively into areas they really didn’t want to go to.
“We got five guys back and in a stance with a quicker pace and made it really difficult for them offensively.”
Whiteoak’s Landon Barnett broke the Tigers’ 10-0 run to start the game with a made jumper at 3:00 mark of the opening quarter.
McClain won the opening frame, 18-7, with junior Wesley Potts leading the way with six points, followed by Bryson Badgley, who added five.
In the second period, the Wildcats matched McClain’s offensive output with 12 points but still trailed by double digits, 30-19 at the half.
Kendyll Toney was the Tigers’ offensive spark in the second quarter when he scored seven points, while Barnett scored 11 points in the opening half to lead the Wildcats, which included all seven of his team’s first-quarter points.
“I thought we came out flat and continued to stay flat and couldn’t throw it in the ocean,” said Whiteoak head coach Ryan Barnett. “We couldn’t hit any shots, but hats off to Greenfield. They played well, shot the ball well and boxed out well, and we didn’t. It’s that simple.”
McClain came out firing in the third quarter and got back-to-back threes from Lyle White and Toney and increased the deficit to 36-19 before Brad Ashbaugh and Nick Bailey scored for Whiteoak. Both teams continued to trade baskets the rest of the period, but the Tigers still led comfortably, 43-31 heading into the final stanza after outscoring Whiteoak, 13-12.
The McClain defense turned up the pressure in the fourth quarter, and their offense really started clicking as the Tiger advantage ballooned to 60-38 after a made jump shot and converted free throw by Badgley with a little over two minutes remaining in the contest.
Both coaches emptied their benches down the stretch, allowing several players some valuable playing time, and McClain coasted to the lopsided 64-40 victory. Five Tigers reached the scoring column in the period that saw McClain outscore Whiteoak, 21-9.
“I thought we played nine kids in the first half and ultimately got them all in, and those guys came in and did their thing,” Stewart said, “Isaac Carroll came in and hit a big 3-pointer for us there in the first quarter when I thought we got some really good shots against their 2-3 zone.
“When you take people out to rest or lecture them and the people coming in do something well for the team, it’s really energizing. I thought we played a good, hard 32-minute game tonight, and our kids were energized not just by the result, but by how they got it. So now we’re looking forward to a big weekend.”
McClain improves to 6-3 on the season and got balanced scoring for the game, led by Badgley, who had a game-high 15 points. Toney played one of his best ballgames of the season and was close behind with 14 points. Potts also turned in a fine all-around game for McClain, scoring nine points, along with some solid defense inside.
Rounding out the scoring for the Tigers were White 7, Preston Saunders 6, Camden Closson 4, Chris Starkey 4, Isaac Carroll 3 and Braden Wright 2.
The Wildcats fall to 5-5 overall (3-0 SHAC) and were led by Barnett, who scored a team-high 13 points, followed by Nick Bailey, who also reached double figures with 10.
Rounding out the scoring for Whiteoak were Brad Ashbaugh 7, Carson Emery 5, Bryce Bailey 2, Roades 2 and Hogan Walker with 1.
McClain travels to Washington Friday night before heading to Hillsboro on Saturday. Whiteoak has a league contest on Friday when they go to Fairfield.
