Sports Today: Getting back on schedule

The holidays are done and over with, so now with the sporadic schedule of games out of the way, it is time to get back on track and back to more of a normal schedule when it comes to Highland County athletics.
This week on the basketball court thus far, the McClain (0-5, 1-9) boys played on the road at Zane Trace, and on Wednesday the Hillsboro Lady Indians (1-5, 5-8) hosted the Washington Lady Blue Lions. Though both teams from Highland County had the loss, it was good just to get the week started back to having games on a daily basis.

That brings us to today with two basketball games on the schedule with three girls teams from the county back on the court. The two games are Lynchburg-Clay vs. Whiteoak and Fairfield vs. North Adams. Both games will go toward the Southern Hills Athletic Conference standings.
The Hillsboro wrestling team has a home Frontier Athletic Conference match scheduled for tonight as well as they host the Jackson Ironmen at 6 p.m. at HHS. HHS has had one previous home match earlier this season where they defeated Chillicothe.
McClain’s wrestling meet at Miami Trace was postponed Thursday.
Speaking of wrestling, congratulations are in order to McClain senior wrestler Keegan Rawlins for gaining his 125th career win over the weekend at the McClain Invitational.
There is also bowling in Hillsboro this afternoon, with McClain, Lynchburg-Clay, Fairfield, Whiteoak and Eastern Brown all bowling at Highland Lanes starting at 4:30 p.m. The Hillsboro bowling and swimming teams will both be competing at Chillicothe today.

Girls Basketball
• Lynchburg-Clay vs. Whiteoak
The Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs, who are the hosts of tonight’s game, have the more veteran team and one of the best players in southern Ohio in Peyton Scott. The Lady Mustangs are 6-4 overall, but are 4-1 in the SHAC, while Whiteoak enters this game at 0-6 in the SHAC and 0-10 overall.
Remember, there will be no JV game played as WHS has no JV team, but junior high games will be played before the varsity game.
• Fairfield vs. North Adams
This will be a very exciting game with two of the top teams in the SHAC squaring off for the lone time this year in the standings. North Adams has two 1,000-point scorers on their team in Lakyn Hupp and Avery Harper, while the Fairfield Lady Lions have a 1,000-point scorer in Grace Shope, who is also the all-time leading scorer in FHS program history.
These are the type of games that make high school basketball exciting to watch as North Adams is second place in Division I of the SHAC at 5-1 (8-2 overall) and the Lady Lions are 3-1 in the SHAC, first place in Division II of the conference while holding an overall record of 6-2.

Whiteoak vs. Lynchburg-Clay
Back in 2013, the Whiteoak Wildcats won their home game against rival Lynchburg-Clay by a 67-57 score, sweeping the two games played against one another that season.
In this game, the Wildcats held an 18-point lead in the third quarter, but LCHS battled back with a 21-point fourth frame to make it just a 10-point differential once the final buzzer sounded. Doc Seip led WHS with 21 points in the win (as he is a member of the 1,000-point club), and for LCHS, their leading scorer was Gage Waits with 16 points.
