Sports Roundup: Fairfield volleyball wins Spike and Dig; soccer season begins
The 2018 Spike and Dig volleyball tournament was held Saturday morning at Hillsboro High School, where the Fairfield Lady Lions won the annual event with two wins against Highland County rivals.
Fairfield defeated McClain in the first match of the event by scores of 25-13 and 25-21 in a best-of-three match.
Next, it was Hillsboro winning their first match of the day by defeating the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats, with the first game score coming at 25-23 before eventually advancing to the finals.
In the championship finals, both Hillsboro and Fairfield each won a game, but the finals match went to the Lady Lions as they won the final game of the championship match by a 26-24 score. McClain and Whiteoak faced each other in a consolation match for third place.
The Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs did not compete in the event this year as they, along with Fairfield and Whiteoak, rotate each season.
Next for the Lady Lions is a home Southern Hills Athletic Conference match at Grandle Gymnasium against the Eastern Brown Lady Warriors, followed by an away non-conference match at East Clinton on Tuesday, Aug. 21. Also this upcoming week, FHS hosts Whiteoak on Thursday, Aug. 23 in a SHAC contest.
McClain plays again on Monday, Aug. 20 as they are scheduled to host Eastern Pike in non-conference play. On Tuesday, Aug. 21, McClain travels to face Highland County counterpart Lynchburg-Clay in another non-conference match.
Hillsboro plays again on Wednesday, Aug. 22 at East Clinton in non-conference action.

McClain boys soccer begins with win over Logan Elm; Lady Tigers drop season opener
The McClain boys soccer team opened their 2018 season with a non-conference victory by defeating the Logan Elm Braves in a home match Saturday afternoon by a 1-0 score.
McClain’s lone goal came in the first half by Evan Hutchinson, which was the only goal needed to secure the win.
In girls action, the Lady Tigers lost to Logan Elm in their season opener, 8-1 at McClain Field. The lone goal scored by the Lady Tigers came from Kerigan Pollard.
The Tigers and Lady Tigers are scheduled to host the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs on Tuesday night at McClain Field.

Hillsboro boys soccer defeats Eastern Brown
Hillsboro’s season opener was a success in the win column on Saturday afternoon with the Indians defeating the host Eastern Brown Warriors, 4-2 in a non-conference match.
The Indians were led with a hat-trick by Andrew Gunderman as he finished with three goals and one assist. Also with a goal was Hunter Hice.
Logan Crafton finished with two assists.
Results for the Hillsboro girls soccer match at Eastern Brown were not available.

Lynchburg-Clay boys, girls soccer lose to Xenia
Both the Lynchburg-Clay boys and girls soccer teams played in very competitive games Friday, with both teams falling to the Xenia Buccaneers.
In the boys match, the Mustangs lost by a 2-1 score with the lone boys goal coming from Ian Gragg, with an assist from Chris Young.
The girls match saw all five goals scored in the first half with LC having a 2-0 lead early in the first half but losing by a 3-2 score in non-conference action. Goals for LC in the girls match were from Isabelle Brinkman and Kaylee Lunsford. Peyton Scott finished with an assist.
