Hillsboro Lady Indians unable to keep lead; fall to Unioto
The final two innings on Monday doomed the Hillsboro Lady Indians, as they lost a four-run lead and the non-conference game to the visiting Unioto Lady Shermans by a 6-4 score at Alice Cassner Field.
Hillsboro scored four runs in the first four innings, including two runs in the bottom of the first and one run in both the third and fourth innings to take a 4-0 advantage. Neither team scored a run in the fifth inning, but then the Lady Shermans began their charge and scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning, then added one final run in the seventh.
Hillsboro totaled nine hits and two errors for the game, while Unioto had five hits and five errors.
For HHS in the bottom of the first, their two-run inning started off with two outs, but Kayla Roberts had a hit to centerfield to keep the inning alive with a single, She took second base on a passed ball during the at-bat of Gracey Dearmon.
Dearmon took first base on an error, and that advanced Roberts to third base. Next at the plate was Kinsey Gilliland, and she sent the ball to left field, scoring Roberts from third and moving Dearmon to second base. Mallory Parsons knocked in the second run with a two-out single to the shortstop, putting HHS in front by a 2-0 score.
In the third inning, Dearmon hit a lead-off double to left field, and after the first out was recorded, Parsons had a sacrifice, moving Dearmon to third base. Now with two outs, KaleyJo Myers reached the bases on an error, scoring Dearmon for a three-run lead.
Hillsboro’s final run was scored when Mackenzie Dietrick hit a one-out base hit line drive to left field, and Roberts reached on an error to move Dietrick to second base. Next, Dearmon took first base on an error, scoring Dietrick.
Eight players finished with at least one hit, and Abigail Pettyjohn led the way with a 2-for-3 game at the plate. Also with one hit each were Halle Reveal, Dietrick, Roberts, Dearmon, Gilliland, Parsons and Emma Taylor.
Dearmon was charged with the loss, as she went 5.1 innings in the circle. She allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits and two walks. Dearmon totaled seven strikeouts. Roberts pitched 1.2 innings of relief, as she allowed one run on one hit and one walk. Roberts totaled one strikeout.

McClain defeats host Lynchburg-Clay
The McClain Lady Tigers visited Highland County counterpart Lynchburg-Clay in non-conference softball action on Monday, where they returned to Greenfield with a convincing 12-1 victory in five innings.
In the win, MHS totaled 13 hits and had one error, while LCHS finished with four hits and six errors.
The Lady Tigers led 1-0 at the end of the first inning but broke the game away in the top of the second with a seven-run inning. Lynchburg-Clay responded with a run in the bottom of the second, but McClain was too strong, as they added three runs in the third inning and one last run in the fifth for their 11-run win.
Kerigan Pollard led McClain at the plate by finishing 3-for-4 with two runs, while Kyla Burchett went 1-for-1 with one walk, one hit, two runs and three RBI. Josie Crabtree went 2-for-4, as she collected two runs. Bri Weller went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
Also for the Lady Tigers, McCoy was 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI, and Z. Crabtree also collected an RBI. Beatty was 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI for the Lady Tigers, and Kyndall Penwell finished 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Hutchinson finished 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Burchett, McCoy and Hutchinson each hit a double, while Weller had two doubles in the win. Pollard hit a triple for McClain, and Beatty had a home run. Pollard and Penwell each had a stolen base.
Crabtree was the winning pitcher as she pitched four innings, allowing one run (none earned) on two hits and one walk. Crabtree also struck out seven batters. Burchett pitched one inning of relief, where she allowed no runs on two hits and no walks. Burchett finished with one strikeout.
Lynchburg-Clay’s four hits were off the bats of Sierra Benney, Haleigh Snider, Sarah McKinney and Ashley Ernst. Also for LCHS, Ernst drew a walk, and McKinney had an RBI. Scoring the lone run in the game for LCHS was Madison Banks.
For LCHS, McKinney hit a triple. The loss in the circle was charged to McKinney, who pitched five innings and struck out five batters.
“We started off better tonight, but unclean play on defense continues to plague us,” LCHS head coach Chad McConnaughey said. “At the plate, we continue to struggle to consistently make contact. We have to keep battling and continue to strive to even better.”

Whiteoak falls at home to Paint Valley
Hosting the Paint Valley Lady Bearcats on Monday, the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats were unable to gain a victory at home as they fell to the visiting PV squad, 7-1.
PVHS scored four runs in the first two innings as they scored one run in the top of the first, then followed with a three-run second inning. The Lady Bearcats added one run in the fourth, then tacked on two final runs in the sixth inning.
WHS scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Paint Valley finished with 10 hits and two errors, while the host Lady Wildcats totaled four hits and four errors.
Jaylie Parr finished 2-for-4 at the plate for WHS, while Cora Akers was 1-for-3 with one walk. Averi Bogart went 1-for-3 for WHS, and Emmy Hawkins was 1-for-1 with one run and one walk, as her hit was a triple.
Brooklyn Gross and Brianna Hill each drew a walk for Whiteoak. Akers had three steals, while Alex Greene and Parr each had one stolen base.
Gross was charged with the loss, as she allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks. Hill pitched three innings, where she allowed two runs (both earned) on five hits and two walks. Hill also struck out six batters.
