Hillsboro Lady Indians defeat Batavia; fall to Williamsburg on Opening Day
The Hillsboro Lady Indians softball team won their first outing of the season by defeating the host Batavia Lady Bulldogs, 11-10 in the first round of the Papa John's Opening Day Classic. Hillsboro advanced to the finals of the tournament, falling to Williamsburg, 4-2.
In their first game, Hillsboro (1-1) scored one run in the top of the first, then followed with another run in the third inning. HHS took a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning with a four-run inning, then added another run to their lead in the top of the fifth for a 7-0 advantage.
The game began to change and Batavia took the momentum in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run inning, but HHS responded in the sixth with another three runs.
The Lady Indians added one run in the top of the seventh for a lead of 11-3, but things got interesting in the bottom of the seventh as Batavia scored seven runs, but HHS held on for the one-run win.
HHS totaled 11 runs, 15 hits and had four errors in the season opener. Batavia totaled 10 hits and had one error.
Kinsey Gilliland scored one run for HHS, while Kenzie Dietrick finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored. Kayla Roberts went 3-of-4 with two runs and two RBI. Gracey Dearmon was 2-for-4 with two runs, six RBI and one walk.
Also for HHS in the win over Batavia, Mallory Parsons was 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Halle Reveal was 1-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Kelcie Thornburgh finished 1-for-4 with one RBI, and KaleyJo Myers was 1-for-4 with one run. Abigail Pettyjohn ended at 1-for-4 with one run.
Dearmon, Roberts and Thornburgh each hit a double, while Dietrick hit a triple. Dearmon also hit a grand slam home run in the top of the fourth inning.
Dietrick, Gilliland and Roberts each were hit by a pitch.
Dearmon was also the winning pitcher, as she went seven innings and allowed 10 runs (three earned) on 10 hits and five walks. She finished with eight strikeouts.
In the championship game, the Lady Indians lost by a 4-2 score to Williamsburg in a game played at Batavia High School.
Williamsburg scored two runs in the top of the first inning and added another run in the fifth inning for a 3-0 lead. HHS scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, and both teams scored a run in the seventh inning.
Each team had four hits, and Hillsboro committed one error.
For HHS, Gilliland was 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Roberts finished the game at 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Emma Taylor was 1-for-3.
Both Gilliland and Roberts hit a home run in the loss to Williamsburg. Roberts pitched seven innings for HHS, allowing three earned runs on four hits and three walks. She also struck out seven and walked three batters.

Lynchburg-Clay falls to Georgetown in road doubleheader
In their season-opening doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs played two games on the road against the Georgetown Lady G-Men, falling by scores of 10-0 and 17-3.
In the first game of the season, Lynchburg-Clay totaled two hits, one error and no runs in the six-inning game, while Georgetown collected 10 runs, 15 hits and had no errors.
Georgetown scored two runs in the first, followed by one run in both the third and fourth innings. They added two runs in the fifth, and the sixth inning saw four runs cross the plate for the hosts.
For LCHS in the season opener, their hits were off the bats of Madison Banks and Courtney Wilson. Autumn Griffith had a SAC, and Sarah McKinney reached the bases after being hit by a pitch. Banks also had a stolen base.
The second game of the twin bill saw LCHS (0-2) fall by a 17-3 score to Georgetown, In the loss, LCHS scored one run in the top of the third and followed with two runs in the fourth inning. LCHS totaled four hits and had one error.
For Georgetown, they had five runs in the first inning, followed with a five-run second inning. They added two runs in the third, then came another five runs in the fourth inning, as the game was complete in five innings.
For LCHS, Brya McClain finished 1-for-1 with two walks and one RBI. Sierra Benney went 2-for-3, and Haleigh Snider had one RBI.
Also for LCHS in the second game, Jenna Waits had a walk, Madison Banks went 1-for-1 with one RBI as her hit was a double, and Natalie Gray finished with one run and two walks with no official at-bat. Lynchburg-Clay also had one run and a walk from Samantha Crowthers.
“I feel like our youth is shining through as we begin the season. With a new coach and three freshmen starters and two sophomore starters, we will need to do a better job of communicating and settling in,” LCHS head coach Chad McConnaughey said. “Our nerves are causing more pressure than I would like. Georgetown had a quality pitcher in Dyer.
“We must do a better job of communicating and finding a way to make more substantial contact at the plate. With each game we gain valuable experience, and we look to improve with each outing.”

Whiteoak splits doubleheader with Felicity-Franklin to begin 2021 season
The Whiteoak Lady Wildcats opened their 2021 season by winning their first game, then dropping their second game against the host Felicity-Franklin Cardinals on Saturday.
The non-conference opener in game one of the twin bill saw Whiteoak win by a 7-5 score, as the away team began the game with two runs in the top of the first inning. From there, WHS added two more runs in the top of the third, and each team scored three runs in the fifth inning.
Felicity-Franklin scored two final runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Whiteoak totaled eight hits and three errors, while Felicity-Franklin had 10 hits and six errors.
Whiteoak saw Brianna Hill finish 1-for-4 with one run, while teammate Cora Akers had one RBI. Jaylie Parr went 2-for-3 with three runs and one walk. Brooklyn Gross scored a run and drew one walk.
Also for WHS, Molly McMullen was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI. Averi Bogart ended at 2-for-3, and Emily Hawkins was 1-for-3.
Parr had a double for WHS, while Hill had a triple. McMullen hit a home run, the first of her varsity career. Gross had one steal, while Parr had two steals.
Gross was the winning pitcher as she went four innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits and one walk, while also having five strikeouts. Hill pitched two innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and one walk, totaling four strikeouts.
In the second game, the Lady ’Cats lost 14-0 in five innings, a game where they totaled one hit and had two errors. Felicity-Franklin had 14 hits and no errors.
Whiteoak’s lone hit in the second game of the doubleheader was a triple by Parr in the first inning, as she was Whiteoak’s lone base runner in the game.
