Multiple athletes from Highland County qualify to regionals; Fairfield boys district runners-up

The Fairfield Lions won six Division III SE District event championships, leading to them being the team runners-up in the district meet for the two-day event, which concluded Saturday at Southeastern High School.

Fairfield scored a total of 100 points, with only the Paint Valley Bearcats finishing higher as they scored 103 points to win the team district championship in the South.

Also for the boys in Highland County, Whiteoak was sixth place out of 13 teams with 52 points and Lynchburg-Clay finished ninth with 28 points.

In the girls results, Fairfield was eighth place overall out of 28 teams. Tied for 10th place was Whiteoak with 18 points. The Lynchburg-Clay girls were not in the event as they compete in Division II.

The Fairfield boys gained district runner-up honors with the help of their first-place finishes, including the 4x800m relay event as Bennett Hodson, Ethan Davis, Gavin Campbell and Brandtson Duffie had a time of 8:43.09 for first place. In that same 4x800m relay event, the Whiteoak team of Hunter Morgan, Jacob Campbell, Zach DeAtley and Atlee Carr qualified for regionals with a third-place finish of 9:07.44.

Also for the Lions, Duffie was first place in the 1600m run with a time of 4:37.41, and that same event brought another regional qualifier from Highland County as Morgan of Whiteoak had a third-place time of 4:51.59.

Duffie had another first-place finish in a singles event as he was the top finisher in the 800m run with a time of 2:00.52. That event saw Fairfield teammate Bennett Hodson finish in second place to go to regionals with a time of 2:03.54.

The Lions also had a 4x400m relay team place first overall as the team of Hodson, Gavin Campbell, Blake Haines and Duffie were first with a time of 3:35.26.

Fairfield also had a pole vault district champion as Ethan Saunders had a height of 11-00.00 for the top spot. Fairfield gained a first-place finish in the 3200m run as Ethan Davis was the fastest finisher with a time of 10:31.21, and in second place in the event was teammate Cohen Frost at 10:49.19. Joining them at regionals with a third place finish was Whiteoak’s Hunter Morgan at 10:58.88.

The Fairfield 4x100m relay team of Bryce Posey, Saunders, Tristan Victor and Wyatt Fent were fourth place and qualified for regionals with a time of 47.21.

Another state qualifier from Highland County was Miller of Whiteoak in the 110m hurdles with a time of 17.18 for second place at districts.

The WHS 4x200m relay team of Jacob Campbell, Taylor Newton, Bryce Bailey and Titus Taylor were fourth place finishers at 1:38.76 to become regional qualifiers. Two runners from Highland County in the 300m hurdles qualified for regionals as Whiteoak’s Miller was second place at 44.23, and Lynchburg-Clay’s Balon was third at 44.34.

As for the girls who finished in the Top 4 from Highland County, Whiteoak’s Kensley Bailey, a junior, became a regional qualifier in three events, as she was third place in the long jump at 16-00.50, fourth place in the high jump at 4-10.00 and fourth place in the 100m dash at 13.14.

Fairfield’s Sammi Shepherd was second place in the pole vault at 8-06.00. Fairfield teammate Ciara Colwell was second place in the 3200m run at 12:12.60.

Also for Fairfield, in the 4x800m relay, the team of Colwell, Shepherd, Morgan Richmond and Emily Price finished with a fourth-place time of 11:24.01 to advance to regionals.

Fairfield’s 4x200m relay team of Mikayla Griffith, Payton Harvey, Paige Teeters and Ailean Duffie also qualified for regionals with a district fourth-place time of 1:53.93.

The Division III Regional Championships will take place on Wednesday, May 22 and Friday, May 24 at Fairfield Union High School, with both days starting at 4:30 p.m.
