McClain boys and girls golf host the 2018 Adam Sharp Memorial
GREENFIELD — The 2018 boys and girls golf season has begun, and the McClain Tigers got off to a solid start as the girls were second place and the boys were third place overall at their host event — the Adam Sharp Memorial — held at Buckeye Hills Country Club. The Tigers also had the meet medalist in the boys event with Trevor Newkirk having a score of 35 in the nine-hole event to finish one-under-par. Hillsboro’s Kristin Jamieson was the medalist for the girls event.
The winning team in the boys event were the West Union Dragons with a score of 171, followed by the Jackson Ironmen at 188. The Tigers had the aforementioned third-place score of 191, followed by the Washington Blue Lions at 198 for fourth place. The fifth-place spot went to the West Union ‘B’ team at 199, and the Hillsboro Indians were sixth place, finishing with a score of 201.
The rest of the team scores included: Miami Trace (203), Fairfield (207), North Adams (207), Whiteoak (222) and Vinton County (225).
For the Tigers, Trevor Newkirk led the team with a score of 35, followed by Trenton Newkirk at 42. The other top scores for MHS were Zane Mustard at 48 and Carson Spangler at 66.

"Trevor shot his best round today, and he was solid off the tee and had three birdies,” McClain boys head coach Brandon Streitenberger said about the match medalist. "Trevor was flat on fire.
“We appreciate the Sharp family for being with the golfers today. This invite is done in Adam Sharp's memory. He was a special person and golfer. Also, thanks to Corner Pharmacy for being our corporate sponsor. We had a great turnout today, and hopefully this event continues to grow each year. This is the most teams we've had in a while."
Hillsboro’s boys scores included Gabe Mycroft leading the way with a score of 47. Next was Will Kiefer at 48 for his score, and he was followed by Gavin Puckett at 49 and Ryan Harless 57.
The Fairfield Lions were led by Ryland Donley with his score of 44, and in second for the Lions in scoring were Bryson Simmons and Conner Shoemaker each with a score of 54. Wyatt Willey rounded out the Lions’ match scoring at 55.
Whiteoak finished with Zach Harless having a team-best score of 42, followed by Jacob Campbell with a 53 score. Ryan Roberts was next at 62, and Chase Butler finished Whiteoak’s scoring with 65.
In the girls event, the West Union Lady Dragons won with a team score of 184, followed by the McClain Lady Tigers at 201 for the runner-up spot. Third place went to Westfall with a 206 score.
The Top 5 was completed by Vinton County at 206 and Miami Trace with a final score of 236. In sixth place came the Fairfield Lady Lions at 241, and Jackson was seventh with a team total of 236. Hillsboro — who were the Frontier Athletic Conference champions last season — and Zane Trace didn’t field a full girls team.
For Hillsboro, they did have the girls medalist with Jamieson having a nine-hole score of 32.
The Lady Tigers of McClain were led on the course by Erika Martin with a score of 43, while teammate Bryn Karnes had a final score of 48. Next for MHS was Bri Weller with a total of 52, and finishing the McClain scoring were Cassidy Willis with a 58 and Shayna Beatty at 63.
The Lady Lions were led on Tuesday by Rachel Schuler with a 50 score, followed next by Alexis Tompkins at 55, Bre Flint at 65 and Abby Davis at 71.
“I was proud of the girls for scoring this low to start the year,” McClain girls golf coach Jarrod Haines said. “We have had kids playing all summer, and you could really tell (Tuesday).
“I would like to thank Buckeye Hills for hosting this event and Brandon Streitenberger for putting the effort into this event. It was a great day to honor the memory of a great kid, Adam Sharp.”
