Lions defeat rival Whiteoak with balanced scoring

MOWRYSTOWN — It was a packed gym in Mowrystown with a tournament atmosphere between two Southern Hills Athletic Conference and Highland County counterparts. Once the final buzzer sounded, it was the visiting Fairfield Lions defeating the host Whiteoak Wildcats, 70-57.
The Lions held the lead after each quarter and had five players who scored points, all scoring no fewer than 10 points in the win against the defending SHAC Division II champion Whiteoak squad.
Tytis Cannon led the Lions with 26 points, as he made seven two-point field goals, two 3-pointers and he finished 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Reese Teeters finished with 14 points, and with 10 points each were Jon Bentley, Koben Zink and TJ Mootz.
The first quarter for the two rivals began with Whiteoak scoring the first five points of the frame, only to see Cannon score six straight points off a 3-pointer and three-point play for a 6-5 Fairfield lead. Both teams then connected from beyond the arc, and eventually the Lions held a 14-8 advantage with 2:39 left in the opening quarter.
Brad Ashbaugh answered with a 3-pointer with 2:22 left in the opening frame, bringing the Wildcats within three points of tying the score at 14-11. The rest of the frame ended with the two teams exchanging baskets, leading to the 18-13 advantage by the Lions after eight minutes of action.
The second frame saw the Lions score 16 points, while the Wildcats added 12 points to their side of the scoreboard for a 34-25 halftime lead. WHS in the second had points from Ashbaugh, Carson Emery and Landon Barnett.
Ashbaugh led the Wildcats with 22 points for the game as he made six two-point baskets, three 3-pointers and was 1-of-1 from the free-throw line. Emery finished with 19 points for the Wildcats by collecting six two-point baskets, and he went 9-of-9 from the free-throw line.
Barnett was the third WHS player to have double figures in scoring with 11 points, making two two-point baskets, one 3-pointer and four free throws. Other final scoring for the Wildcats included three points by Luken Roades (a 3-pointer) and two points by Hogan Walker.
In the third frame, the Wildcats scored 10 points, as Ashbaugh, Emery and Barnett contributed to the scoring in the frame.
FHS saw Cannon rally the Lions in the third with eight of their 14 points scored in the quarter, making two two-point baskets, and he was 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in the frame. Also in the third, Teeters scored four points, and Bentley added two points from the free-throw line.
Fairfield scored 22 points in the fourth quarter with points by Teeters, Bentley, Zink, Cannon and Mootz. For the game, the Lions were 21-of-24 from the free-throw line with 20 two-point baskets and three 3-pointers.
For the Wildcats, they also scored 22 points with points by Ashbaugh, Emery, Walker and Barnett. The Wildcats went 12-of-20 from the free-throw line, while collecting 15 two-point baskets and five 3-pointers.
Also for the Lions, they committed just seven turnovers, plus they had 27 rebounds and nine assists. Leading FHS in rebounds was Zink with 12 rebounds, giving him a double-double. Cannon finished with seven rebounds, and Teeters had six rebounds.
The win moves Fairfield to 1-2 overall, with an SHAC record of 1-0. The Wildcats stand at 3-2 thus far this season with an SHAC record of 0-2.
