LC Lady Mustangs host ‘Ballin’ For Braydon,’ sweep Whiteoak

DODSONVILLE — On a night where the Lynchburg-Clay volleyball team and FFA hosted “Ballin’ for Braydon” Monday, along the way the Lady Mustangs defended their home court by defeating the visiting Whiteoak Lady Wildcats in three straight sets.
This was the non-conference meeting between the two teams, and LC won the match against their Highland County counterpart by scores of 25-15, 25-11 and 25-14.
The win moves LC to 9-4 overall on the season, and in Southern Hills Athletic Conference play LC currently stands at 3-2. As for Whiteoak, they fall to 3-7 overall, and in SHAC play thus far this season, WHS sits at 2-4.
“We’ve been trying to find some continuities and cohesiveness because we’ve struggled with that, but (Monday) we did a good job of that,” LC head coach Mark Faust said. “We had three or four players playing positions they hadn’t played. We were trying something different, and it worked out well. Hopefully we can build on that because we still have a bunch of games in front of us.
“This was a good way for us to start a week where we play four games.”
Faust also spoke about the “Ballin’ for Braydon” event, a benefit for Braydon Bailey, an LC senior who is traveling to Cincinnati daily for radiation treatments to shrink a tumor around his eye.
“This was a good event, and Braydon (Bailey) is a good kid and has had some unfortunate health issues,” Faust said. “It was a good way to show him the community was behind him, and it was a good way for the girls, the FFA and everybody involved to show Braydon he’s cared about and we are going to support him.”
In the first set, it was Whiteoak who got off to the quick start, taking a 5-1 advantage with help from Katie Ames with a play at the net and an ace from Macy Knoblauch, and they scored their fifth point with a kill from Cylee Bratton.
LC responded by eventually tying the score at 5-5 as Ashley Ernst helped the Lady Mustangs with a serve, and the score went to 5-5 on a block at the net by Zoe Fittro.
Later in the match, the score was tied at 6-6, but then it was Tylar Griffith’s turn to serve, and that is what she did. Her serves sent the score from being a 7-6 LC advantage to them leading 14-6 as she compiled aces and serves that the Lady ’Cats were unable to send back over the net.
As the first set continued, Bratton for WHS made it a 14-10 score, then LC eventually built a 16-11 advantage with a kill from Hannah Morgan. Whiteoak’s Sydnie Raines scored the Lady ’Cats’ 12th point of the match, but later Morgan of LC gave the Lady Mustangs a six-point advantage at 20-14 off a serve.
As the first set came to a close, LC had points from Amber DeBoard, Makayla Creed and the set came to a close off a kill by Griffith for the 25-15 score.
The second set was tied just twice early on, as the first two points were scored by Morgan and Ciara Maynard for the 1-1 tie. As the set continued, LC built a 6-3 advantage with points from Ernst and Griffith, but WHS answered with a point by Knoblauch.
LC eventually rallied for a 12-7 advantage, forcing WHS to call a timeout. Following the timeout, LC held a lead of 17-8 with points from Mia McCammon and a line drive serve by Creed.
The second set eventually ended with LC getting points from Griffith and Abby Blankenship, and the 25th point was scored off a kill by Morgan for a 25-11 set two win.
The third and final set was tied six times, all the way up to 12-12 when LC’s Morgan tied the score. During that stretch for WHS, Baylee Carey had an ace, Hannah Maynard contributed a kill, Ciara Maynard had an ace, while Ames and Knoblauch also helped add to the WHS side of the scoreboard.
For LC during the 12-12 stretch, Morgan and Abby Pitzer contributed with points, and Fittro had a play at the net. From that point on, the Lady Mustangs outscored WHS, 13-2 to win the match, with the final point being scored by Morgan on a kill. In the final run of points, LC had serving from Ernst that caused issues for their opponent, helping in the aforementioned 13-2 run.
