Late turnovers cost Whiteoak in loss to Fayetteville

MOWRYSTOWN – In a Southern Hills Athletic Conference game that saw both the Whiteoak Wildcats and Fayetteville Rockets hold double-figure leads, the win came down to the final minute where the Rockets ignited their play to leave with a 60-58 win over WHS Friday night.
In the first quarter Whiteoak built a 12-point lead, and in the third frame the Rockets held an 11-point advantage. Both leads were erased by their opponent, and the SHAC Division II win all came down to the fourth frame between the two rivals.
Fayetteville led the Wildcats 42-39 when the fourth frame began, and it was Bradley Ashbaugh who brought WHS to within a point of tying the score in the early stages of the fourth quarter when he sank a jumper.
Later the Wildcats trailed by five points, but a jumper by Carson Emery cut the deficit, and as the quarter continued the Wildcats battled to take a 50-49 lead with 3:51 left in regulation.
From there, the score was tied at 50, 52 and 54 with Emery sinking a corner jumper to put WHS in the lead at 52, then the score went to 54-54 following two made free throws from Landon Barnett with 2:16 left in regulation.
Next saw WHS take the lead from the free-throw line with 2:00 on the clock in the final frame as Emery went 2-of-2 in his attempts, but the Rockets tied the score at 56 with 1:29 left in the SHAC contest.
WHS took the lead again in the fourth with a one-handed basket by Barnett, but Fayettevile didn’t back down and tied the score with a steal and layup by Jayden Bradshaw. Bradshaw, again, had a steal and layup to put FHS ahead by a 60-58 score, which turned out to be the game-winner with 28 seconds left in the game.
Whiteoak had another opportunity late in the fourth to tie the score or take the lead, but a third consecutive turnover, this time with a steal by Blake Coffman sealed the win for the Rockets.
The first half saw Whiteoak hold a 17-8 lead at the end of the frame, but it was the Rockets who led at halftime by a 27-26 score. Fayetteville also held the lead at the end of the third at 42-39.
Whiteoak was led in scoring for the game by Barnett with 19 points, as he made three two-point baskets, one 3-pointer and he went 10-of-12 from the free-throw line.
Ashbaugh finished with 18 points coming from six two-point baskets and two 3-pointers. Also scoring points for WHS were Luken Rhoades with nine points, Emery with six points, Hogan Walker with three points and Bryce Bailey with three points.
As a team WHS finished with 13 two-point baskets, five 3-pointers and they were 17-of-24 from the free-throw line.
Fayetteville was led by Bradshaw with 22 points, followed by Austin Snider with 14 points. Coffman totaled 10 points for the Rockets. Other scorers for FHS were: Conner Holden (nine), AJ Attinger (three) and Giacomb Pegan (two).
The loss Friday and a win over Piketon Saturday send WHS to a 3-1 record overall.
