Lady Wildcats have season ended by Paint Valley

MCDERMOTT — It was a season of learning on the go for the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats, and on Wednesday night the first step rebuilding their program came to a close in the Division IV SE District Sectional Semifinals as the No. 10 seeded Lady Wildcats lost to the No. 7 seeded Paint Valley Lady Bearcats by a 60-20 score.
The loss ends the season for the Lady Wildcats with a 1-22 overall record, with their win coming against Silver Grove (Ky.) in non-conference play this past January.
Though the season wasn’t easy for the Lady Wildcats, they played with a strong effort in their sectional semifinal loss to Paint Valley of the Scioto Valley Conference, but they trailed by a 19-5 score at the conclusion of the first frame.
Leading Whiteoak in scoring was Megan Botts with eight points in the final game of the season. Paint Valley was led by Lexi Woods with 23 points.
In the opening frame Paint Valley scored the first eight points of the game with Woods scoring six of those points, and Caitlin Dobbins chipped in with a basket. WHS broke the scoring streak with a jumper by Cylee Bratton at the 5:11 mark.
From there, PV (8-15) increased their lead to 12-2 with baskets by Kelsey Dunn and Woods, but at the 4:15 mark of the first, Hailey Monteith of Whiteoak sank a 3-pointer to get WHS back to within seven points of the Lady Bearcats. Those were the final points of the first for WHS with Paint Valley going on a 7-0 run in the final 4:00 of the first frame with points from Dunn, Woods and Ahneka Campbell for the 19-5 advantage.
Whiteoak scored more points in the second quarter than they did in the first frame, but also allowed more, with Paint Valley taking a 40-14 lead at the half. PV outscored the Lady Wildcats, 21-9 in the eight-minute second quarter.
Paint Valley opened the second with a free throw from Dobbins, only to be answered with a 3-pointer by Botts to make it a 20-8 deficit with 7:09 on the second-quarter clock.
That trey by WHS was answered with six straight points by PV by Dobbins, Woods and Campbell. WHS answered this time with yet another 3-pointer, as Courtney Gross swished the basket at the 3:19 mark of the second.
PV took control of the remainder of the second frame with a 12-2 run from the 2:10 to the end of the first half with a 3-pointer by Dobbins, a three-point play from Woods, two more free throws by Woods, a jumper from Dunn and two points by Jill Bouillion to end the first-half scoring, making it a 40-14 score after two quarters. Whiteoak’s two points were by Gross with 36 seconds left in the quarter.
The third frame went in favor of the Lady Bearcats as they outscored Whiteoak, 13-2 in the frame.
It was WHS who scored first in the frame with a layup by Bratton. From there, though, Paint Valley went on a tear, scoring the next 13 points in the frame off baskets from Woods, Bouillion, Baylee Uhrig and Campbell for a 53-16 score with 2:53 left in the third en route to a 37-point lead and a running clock as those were the final points scored in the quarter.
The fourth frame, which PV won 7-4, began with four straight points by PV, but Whiteoak came back with a 3-pointer by Botts at the 5:41 mark. PV added more points with a jumper by Dunn — who totaled 11 points for Paint Valley — with around 3:30 left in the game. WHS also had a free throw in the fourth by Bratton with 2:29 on the clock, but that was equaled with a free throw by PV’s Cassidy Rinehart to make it a 60-20 score.
Playing their final game for WHS were seniors Megan Botts and Courtney Gross.
Paint Valley will play again Feb. 17 at NWHS, as they’ll face No. 2 seeded Glenwood New Boston at 1 p.m. in the sectional finals.
