Lady Lions win Volley for a Cure game over Whiteoak

LEESBURG — On a night that was about more than volleyball, the Fairfield Lady Lions hosted their annual Volley for a Cure game Thursday against the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats, as they held fundraisers and auctions for the annual breast cancer awareness event.
The Lady Lions played to honor Shannon Miller.
“This year, we decided to donate it to our local resident Shannon Miller,” Fairfield head coach Lesley Hattan said. “She’s battling the disease right now, and we thought since she’s a local resident we’d do something to try to help her out. It turned out really well. Our live auction was good, and we had a bake sale and silent auction with pies, cakes and baskets.”

As for the Southern Hills Athletic Conference game, the Lady Lions — who are 10-0 in the SHAC — defeated the visiting Lady ’Cats in three straight sets by 25-12, 25-22 and 25-22 scores.
“We stay undefeated in the league, but it wasn’t the greatest match on our side, and we didn’t play our best at all,” Hattan said. “We were kind of sloppy, a little slow today for some reason, and we’ll have to pick it up tomorrow for Lynchburg-Clay.”
Fairfield began the first game with a 3-0 lead, including an ace from Kami Magee, and later held a 5-2 lead with an ace by Layla Hattan. Whiteoak tied the game at 5-5 with two aces by Katie Ames.
The score was later tied at 7-7 and 8-8, but FHS regained the lead with help from a serve by Magee and then held a 10-8 advantage with a point by Hattan. FHS continued to add to their lead with Taylor Lawson adding a point, plus a point from Hattan for a 16-9 lead. WHS continued to battle with a point by Jeanette Cox for a 17-10 score.
The first game continued with an ace by Lauren Arnold and a point at the net by Kaiti White. White then aided Fairfield with serves as she closed out the first game with three straight points for the 25-12 win.
In Game 2 at Grandle Gymnasium, the play was a lot closer with the score being tied at 1-1, 2-2, 6-6, 7-7, 21-21 and 22-22. Getting to their scores, Whiteoak’s first point was scored by Cox, while they also had help from Cylee Bratton, Sydnie Raines, Baylee Carey and Ames, among others, in the second game.
For FHS, in the second game they went back and forth on the scoreboard, eventually making a comeback after trailing for most of the game. After holding the lead at 1-0, the Lady Lions didn’t regain the lead until they broke a 21-21 tie with points from Magee. After WHS hit the ball out of play to break a 22-22 score, FHS scored the final two points to win game two at 25-22.
The third game of the SHAC match saw FHS gain an early 5-1 lead with help from an ace by Hattan. Later Arnold increased their lead to 7-4 with a point. WHS made a comeback staying within striking range for most of the third game, but FHS eventually fended off the Lady ’Cats for the 25-22 win.
“I’m impressed with our girls this season,” Hattan said. “They put in the hard work, and they are very diligent. They have a mission and are working really hard toward that mission, and I’m very proud of them. I hope it goes the way they want it.”
