Lady Lions dominate Whiteoak for SHAC victory

LEESBURG — From start to finish, the Fairfield Lady Lions controlled all aspects of their Southern Hills Athletic Conference game Thursday night, defeating Highland County rival Whiteoak, 81-9 to move to the .500 mark on the season.
The win at Grandle Gymnasium was the second straight win for the Lady Lions after starting the season with two losses, moving them to 1-1 in the SHAC and 2-2 overall on the year. The loss by WHS moves them to 0-2 in the SHAC and 0-3 overall.
“We are glad to be at .500 at this point as the first two games didn’t go the way we wanted, and we have been able to get back on track,” Fairfield head coach Chad Hamilton said. “Tonight was good because we were able to get everybody going and got experience, and hopefully that will help us down the road.
“We have a busy few weeks before Christmas, and we need all the work we can get. We got to work a little bit on our zone, and we are going to try and utilize that as we move forward. It was a good win and nice to get everybody in the game.”
Twenty-three seconds into the game, the Lady Lions scored the first points of the game and never looked back as a put-back bucket by Brianna Barnes was the catalyst for a 26-point first frame for the home team, which included a 22-0 run on the scoreboard.
Following the points by Barnes, Samara Cannon had a steal and layup, followed by a layup by Barnes (with the assist by Lauren Arnold) and another two points by Cannon came from the free-throw line. Cannon added to her totals with a 3-pointer at the 5:31 mark for a 11-0 lead.
Following a Whiteoak timeout, Trinity Huff had a steal and layup, with Barnes connecting with a rebound and basket. Emma Fouch scored the next seven points to make it a 22-0 lead with 1:51 left in the first quarter.
Whiteoak scored their first points of the game with a basket by Cylee Bratton at the 1:35 mark. FHS closed out the first frame with four points by Madison Bronner for the 24-point advantage.
The second frame was all Fairfield with a 27-0 quarter against their Highland County counterpart as the Lady Lions mixed up their lineup with starters and players off the bench for a 53-2 halftime lead.
Scoring points in the second quarter for Fairfield were Ella Newkirk (3-pointer and two two-point field goals), Cannon, Arnold, Molly Thackston, Braylynn Haines and Barnes, as she had 13 points in the first half.
For the game, FHS was led in scoring by Cannon with 20 points as she sank seven two-point baskets, one 3-pointer and she was 3-of-3 from the free-throw line. Barnes was next with 19 points as she totaled nine two-point baskets and was 1-of-2 from the free-throw line.
The third frame saw the Lady Lions outscore Whiteoak, 14-2 as points for FHS came off baskets by Newkirk, Cannon, Huff and Barnes. Whiteoak scored their points off a jumper from Bratton with 3:46 left in the third.
The fourth quarter saw FHS score 14 more points with baskets by Cannon, Cadence Saunders, Madison Bronner, Haines, Barnes and Jaden Smith as all 11 Fairfield players scored points in the game.
Other scoring totals for the Lady Lions included Newkirk with nine points, Fouch with seven points and Huff with six points. Also with six points was Bronner, and scoring four points each were Thackston and Haines. Having two points each in the game were Arnold, Saunders and Smith.
Whiteoak’s fourth-quarter scoring included a 3-pointer by Hailey Monteith and a two-point basket by Cylee Bratton.
WHS was led by Bratton with six points for the game.
Next for Fairfield is an away game on Saturday, Dec. 2 at South Webster in non-conference play.
