Hillsboro wins ’22 volleyball Spike & Dig Tournament

The Hillsboro Lady Indians were the winners of the 2022 Spike & Dig Tournament held at Hillsboro High School on Saturday (Aug. 20), defeating three Highland County counterparts. McClain was the tournament runner-up, followed by Whiteoak and Lynchburg-Clay.
In the first-round matches, Hillsboro won the best-of-three contest against Lynchburg-Clay by scores of 25-9 and 25-15. McClain won their first-round match against Whiteoak by scores of 25-21 and 25-22.
The third-place match saw Whiteoak defeat Lynchburg-Clay two sets to one (2-1).
In the championship finals, Hillsboro defended their home court with a three-set win, though MHS won set one at 25-23. In the second and third sets, Hillsboro was victorious at 30-28 and 25-23, as this matchup was non-conference.
For Hillsboro in their first-round match against LCHS, Cora Akers led the Lady Indians with eight kills, while Samantha Tipton was next with seven kills. Chloe Masslow finished with two aces, followed by Akers and Camryn Spruell each with one ace.
Addison Huff led HHS in assists against LCHS with 21. The digs leaders were Mya Bell with nine, and with four each were Akers and Masslow.
The two wins at the Spike & Dig tournament put HHS at 2-1 on the season, as they lost a non-conference contest to Wilmington in three sets on Monday, Aug. 22 at WHS by scores of 25-18, 25-12 and 25-10.
In that match, Akers led HHS with seven kills. Akers, Halle Reveal and Masslow each had one ace. Tipton totaled one block, and Huff was the digs leader with 11, followed by Spruell with nine and Akers with eight. Huff also led with 13 assists.
