Fairfield’s Brandtson Duffie, Hillsboro’s Molly McCreary win Highland County Invitational

LEESBURG — The Fairfield Lions boys and girls cross-country teams won the 2018 Highland County Invitational on Tuesday, held at Fairfield High School on their newly designed course.
Though both races were held at the same time, the boys individual winner was Fairfield’s Brandtson Duffie, and the girls individual winner was Hillsboro’s Molly McCreary. Duffie finished with a time of 17:37, and McCreary had a time of 22:43. Later in the evening, McCreary also competed in Hillsboro’s girls soccer match vs. McClain.

In a closer look at the boys race, the Lions scored 16 points for the team win. The Lions took the Top 4 spots and had six of the Top 10 spots. In second place was Austin Setty at 17:43, followed in third place by Bennett Hodson at 18:03 and the fourth place spot went to Cohen Frost at 18:18.
Rounding out the Top 5 was Whiteoak’s Hunter Morgan with a time of 18:34. The rest of the Top 10 saw Fairfield’s Ethan Davis in sixth place at 19:05, followed in seventh place by Hillsboro’s Bailey Lucarello at 19:09. In eighth place was Fairfield’s Brant Haines with a time of 19:17, followed in ninth place by Hillsboro’s Nathan Spencer at 19:18. The 10th-place spot went to Lynchburg-Clay’s Austin Barnhill with a time of 19:26.
As for the team scores, in second place for the boys was Whiteoak with 58 points, followed by Hillsboro in third place (67) and McClain (110). Lynchburg-Clay didn’t field enough boys for a team score. The Lions have won the Highland County Invitational for nine straight years and 10 of the 12 years it has been held.
Fairfield was the only girls team to compete for a team score. They have won the Highland County Invitational for three straight years.
In the girls race, in second place was Fairfield’s Morgan Richmond with a time of 24:06. The rest of the Top 5 (there were a total of 18 runners in the girls race) included: Fairfield’s Megan Gragg at 24:45 in third, Lynchburg-Clay’s Raelynn Ruble in fourth place at 25:25 and in fifth place was Hillsboro’s Keeley Schurman at 26:34.
