Fairfield wins in convincing fashion against Whiteoak

MOWRYSTOWN — Following a first quarter where the Fairfield Lady Lions outscored the host Whiteoak Lady Wildcats by 20 points, the road team dominated the Southern Hills Athletic Conference matchup, winning by a 73-24 score at Whiteoak High School.
Fairfield didn’t waste any time en route to victory, as they were also coming off their first loss on the season on Monday. They led by a 9-2 score in under two minutes of game action with Madison Bronner and Emma Fouch leading the chase early on, with Bronner scoring four points off two baskets and Fouch adding five points, including a three-point play.
Fouch led all scorers with 33 points in the win. Bronner totaled 10 points and unofficially had 12 rebounds (11 in the first half) for a double-double.
“We rebounded really well, especially Madison (Bronner). She got everything,” FHS head coach Chad Hamilton said. “We wanted to speed up the pace from the get-go, and we did that. We got a lot of early scores, and the ball moved well. Overall the ball moved well, we rebounded well and we shot well, so that was a good game to get back in the swing of things for us.
“We have the same five starters we had last year, and we have a lot of new girls coming off the bench. With as strong as our starting five are, they don’t get a lot of time, and the only way they are going to get better is with experience. It is nice to get them in and mix them in with the starting five like we were able to tonight.”
From the 4:55 mark until the end of the first frame, all the scoring belonged to the Lady Lions as Braylynn Haines scored four straight points — including a jumper — followed by a 3-pointer from Fouch. Haines totaled 10 points for the Lady Lions.
Fouch then had points in the paint after grabbing a rebound with 3:12 left in the quarter, forcing the Lady ’Cats to call a timeout.
The first frame ended with a layup by Ella Newkirk and two points by Peyton Magee — off a pass from Shaleigh Duncan — for the 22-2 lead. Newkirk finished the game with seven points, and Magee totaled nine points.
Whiteoak’s two points in the first were scored by Jaylie Parr, as she finished the game with six points.
Fairfield began the second frame from where they left off in the first quarter by scoring the first six points, with four points by Bronner and two from Fouch for a 28-2 lead with 6:38 still remaining in the first half.
Whiteoak’s Madison Thompson broke up what became a 26-0 run from the 6:32 mark of the first quarter to the 5:33 mark of the second frame. FHS continued the second frame with a 10-2 run with points from Haines, Newkirk, Fouch and Bronner. WHS ended the second quarter with a basket by Parr, as FHS led at 36-6.
The third frame saw WHS score first with a basket by Parr, and though Fouch answered with five points — including a 3-pointer — the Lady ’Cats didn’t buckle. Instead, they answered with a 3-pointer by Kara Ward. Ward ended the game with five points.
Fairfield had an answer of their own with strong play by Haines and Fouch for a 47-11 advantage. Whiteoak’s Lydia Carr sank a jumper at the 5:20 mark of the quarter. Carr led WHS with eight points.
The third quarter ended with FHS scoring the next 12 of 15 points put on the scoreboard, with Fouch having nine of those points (with a 3-pointer at the 3:47 mark), plus a three-point play by Magee. WHS in that span had a free throw made by Molly McMullen and a put-back basket by Ward.
With FHS leading by a 59-16 score, the fourth frame saw the Lady Lions add 12 straight points to start the final frame with a jumper by Faith Donley, a layup from Magee, a 3-pointer from Fouch and two made free throws by Magee with 3:57 left in the final frame.
Whiteoak’s Carr sank consecutive 3-pointers, and after a Fairfield timeout, WHS went back to the hoop with a jumper from Thompson. FHS scored the final two points of the game with a steal and layup by Donley.
The loss drops Whiteoak to 0-8 overall this season. Fairfield improves to 5-1 overall, as they are 4-1 in the SHAC.
