Fairfield wins boys and girls 2018 McClain Opener

GREENFIELD — The Fairfield boys and girls cross-country teams began their season with wins at the 2018 McClain Opener event in Greenfield, with both squads taking the top spot in their respective events held at Mitchell Park.
In the girls event, the Lady Lions scored a total of 32 points in their victory, while Washington was second place with 37 points and Miami Trace took third place with 66 points. Whiteoak and Hillsboro had individual runners in the event but didn’t qualify as a team.
Taking the first-place spot in the race was Washington’s Cloe Copas with a time of 20:57. Hillsboro’s Mollie McCreary was second place with a time of 21:08. The rest of the Top 5 in the event included Miami Trace’s Mallory Conklin in third with a time of 21:15, Fairfield’s Morgan Richmond in fourth place at 22:17 and in fifth place was Washington’s Shawna Conger at 23:28.

For Fairfield, they also had Makenna Colwell in sixth place (24:31), Emily Price in eighth place (24:38) and Audra Greiner in ninth place with a time of 24:43. In 11th place for the Lady Lions was Anna Davis (25:00), followed by Laynee Duffie in 14th place (26:56), Payton Harvey in 15th place (27:08), Meadow Cunningham in 18th place (27:40), Hannah Hodson in 21st place (30:20) and Maddie Griffith in 22nd place (31:28).
The Lady Indians of Hillsboro had three runners in the event with McCreary in the aforementioned second-place spot at 21:08, along with Keeley Schurman in 12th place (25:12) and Trinity Howard in 28th place at 35:18.
McClain had two runners in the girls race with Aaliyah Evans finishing in 10th place with a time of 25:00 and Maysun Faulconer in 26th place at 34:51.
Whiteoak’s lone runner was Katie Ames in 13th place with a time of 25:47.
The boys event saw the Lions win with a team score of 18 points, led by race winner Bennett Hodson with a time of 16:39. In fact, the Lions took the Top 4 spots and five of the Top 8 positions in the final standings.
In second place was Cohen Frost with a time of 16:52, followed by Austin Setty in third place at 16:53 and Ethan Davis in fourth place at 16:55. The eighth-place spot went to Brandtson Duffie with a time of 17:16.
Other finishes for the Lions included: 15, Blake Haines (18:11); 16, Gavin Campbell (18:25); 21, Brant Haines (18:41); 52, Riley Friend (22:43); 53, Austin Lovett (22:46); 57, Gavin Cox (23:20); 75, Ryan Benson (28:36); 79, Josh Brown (31:53); and 81, Tucker Green (35:27).
For the third-place Tigers, who tallied 96 points, they were led by Reece Schluep in sixth with a time of 17:13. Also in the Top 20 for McClain was Lyle White in 17th place at 18:33 and Nathan Ernst at 18:40.

Hillsboro finished in sixth place with 134 points, and they were led by Bailey Lucarello in 14th place at 17:45. Also for the Indians, final times included: 25, Alex Rensing (19:15); 32, Ben Sowders (20:02), 33, Jayse Middleton (20:07); 44, Ethan Back (21:46); 45, C.J. Kemper (21:54); 50, Owen Ryan (22:26); 70, Joey Short (26:39); and 74, Liam Smart (27:58).
Following the Lions in the standings were the Miami Trace Panthers in second place with 49 points, followed by McClain in third (96 points), Whiteoak in fourth (114 points), Washington in fifth (115 points) and Hillsboro in sixth place (134 points).
In the junior high boys race, the winner was Landry Hattan of Fairfield with a time of 11:48. Washington’s Kaelin Pfeifer won the girls junior high race with a time of 13:05.
