Fairfield Lions win 4th consecutive SHAC boys track & field championship

LEESBURG — The senior class of the Fairfield Lions boys track and field team gained the Southern Hills Athletic Conference career sweep as the boys team won the conference championship for a fourth consecutive year, this time winning by scoring 131 points at their home track.
Fairfield were the hosts of the 2019 SHAC Track and Field Championships, and on the windy 60-degree day that turned into evening, the Lions did everything necessary and then some to clinch the championship by not only scoring the aforementioned 131 points, but they won over second-place Whiteoak by 33 points.

Whiteoak was second place with 98 points for the runner-up spot. In third place was West Union at 75 points, and fourth place was Eastern with 68 points. Fifth place went to North Adams (65 points), followed by Ripley (64 points), Lynchburg-Clay (56 points), Peebles (52 points), Fayetteville (11 points) and Manchester (1 point).
The Lions in their win on Friday night totaled six first-place finishes, three second-places, four third-place finishes, three fifth-place finishes, three sixth-places and one seventh-place finish for their final scoring.
As for the first-place finishes, the Lions saw senior Bennett Hodson win the 400-meter run with a championship time of 55.84. Another first-place finish came from senior Brandtson Duffie, who in the 800m run finished with a time of 2:02.85.
Duffie also was first place in the 1600m run at 4:43.26. Fairfield’s 4x400m relay team of Hodson, Gavin Campbell, Wyatt Fent and Duffie earned the first-place finish with a time of 4:43.01, winning by nearly 10 seconds over the second-place time.
The Lions 4x800m team of Hodson, Ethan Davis, Campbell and Duffie were also the winners, dominating the race with a time of 8:57.05, as the second-place time was 9:22.64.
Fairfield also won in the field, with senior Ethan Whalen winning the shot put event with a distance of 41-06.00.
Also from Highland County in first place was Whiteoak sophomore Garrett Miller who in the 110m hurdles won with a time of 17.14. Miller was also the winner in the 300m hurdles race in a very close contest as he had a time of 44.26, while Hunter Balon of Lynchburg-Clay was second with a time of 44.66.
In the girls events, Whiteoak junior Kensley Bailey won the 100m dash with a time of 13.29, then came back later and was the winner of the 200m dash at 27.30. Bailey also won the girls high jump event with a height of 4-10.00 and was second place in the long jump with a distance of 16-07.00.
Fairfield’s Ailean Duffie was first in the 100m hurdles with a time of 17.15.
The team championship for the girls meet went to Peebles with a score of 186 points, and in second was Fairfield at 119 points. Third place went to North Adams (82 points), followed by Eastern (64 points) and West Union (46 points) to complete the Top 5. In sixth through ninth place were: Whiteoak (44 points), Lynchburg-Clay (41 points), Manchester (24 points) and Fayetteville (14 points).
