Fairfield Lady Lions dominate Highland County foe Whiteoak

MOWRYSTOWN — The Fairfield Lady Lions took care of business against the host Whiteoak Lady Wildcats in Southern Hills Athletic Conference competition Monday night, earning a road victory over their Highland County rival by a 85-21 score.
The Lady Lions built a 20-7 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter, and from there FHS outscored Whiteoak, 32-4 in the second frame for a halftime lead of 52-11.
Fairfield (3-0, 7-1) scored the first five points of the game, with a free-throw conversion by Braylynn Haines, two made free throws by Madison Bronner and a layup from Peyton Magee — who totaled 14 points for the game — with the assist by Haines, all within three minutes in the SHAC contest.

In Magee’s 14-point effort, she had five two-point field goals, one 3-pointer and was 1-of-2 in her free-throw shooting.
Whiteoak (0-3, 0-6) scored their first points of the game with a basket by Cylee Bratton, but a layup from Ella Newkirk put the Lady Lions ahead 7-2 at the 4:10 mark of the first frame. Whiteoak answered with a basket by Kara Ward, only to see the Lady Lions score the next eight points for a lead of 15-4.
Newkirk totaled 25 points for the Lady Lions in the win, including seven two-point baskets, two 3-pointers and she was also 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. Newkirk scored 19 points in the first half.
Fairfield’s 8-0 run came with points by Bronner, Emma Fouch and Newkirk, with Newkirk making a free throw, followed by a 3-pointer, with 1:27 still left in the first quarter.
Fouch led all scorers with 28 points, as she collected eight two-point buckets, three 3-pointers, and Fouch was 3-of-3 from the free-throw line.
Whiteoak scored again with a free throw by Brooklynne Campbell, only to see Fouch make a 3-pointer with 55 seconds on the scoreboard for a FHS advantage of 18-5.
The final points of the first quarter included a jumper from Whiteoak’s Ward and a layup off a steal by Newkirk for the 20-7 score after eight minutes.
Then came the second frame, and those eight minutes included stellar scoring from the Lady Lions, beginning the quarter with a 9-0 run with all nine points by Newkirk. She began the quarter with two free throws, followed by a 3-pointer at the 6:13 mark for a 25-7 advantage.
Following a Whiteoak timeout, Newkirk made consecutive baskets off layups in the paint, increasing the FHS lead to 29-7 with 5:16 left in the first half. Then Whiteoak’s Madison Berkley and Magee of Fairfield exchanged free throws, only to see Whiteoak’s Kensley Bailey make two straight free-throw attempts for a 30-10 score.
Fairfield responded with 15 straight points in a span of around two minutes, beginning with two consecutive baskets by Fouch for a 34-10 Lady Lion lead with 3:30 remaining in the second quarter. Next was a free-throw conversion by Bronner, and from there Fouch and Magee each sank a 3-pointer for a 41-10 advantage with 2:10 still left in the second quarter.
The run continued with a basket from Magee off a steal at mid-court, and then came a basket on a put-back from Fouch to push the Lady Lions’ lead of 45-10 with 1:51 left in the second quarter.
WHS broke up the scoring run with a free throw at the 1:17 mark by Ward, but Newkirk continued to score points with two free throws, and the final points of the second came off a three-point play by Fouch for the 39-point halftime lead of 50-11.
In the second half, Fairfield outscored the Lady Lions 33-10, with a third frame of 17-3 and fourth quarter of 16-7. In the third for the Lady Lions, Newkirk scored four points and Haines added six points (eight total points for the game), while Magee, Hailey Tolle and Bronner each scored two points. Bronner finished the game with seven points.
Fairfield had nine points by Fouch (including a 3-pointer), two points by Newkirk and one point off a free throw by Cadence Saunders in the fourth quarter.
Whiteoak in the second half had one point from Campbell, two point from Kayla Jones, two points from Emmy Hawkins and five points by Bratton, including a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter.
Leading the way in the scoring column for Whiteoak was Bratton with seven points, while Ward totaled five points. The Lady Wildcats totaled six two-point baskets, one 3-pointer and were 6-of-12 (50-percent) as a team from the free-throw line.
Fairfield finished with 26 two-point buckets, six 3-pointers and were 15-of-21 (71-percent) from the free-throw line.
No JV game was played on Monday night.
