Longtime local head coach Dave Young was posthumously honored with the Naismith Meritorious Service Award during the Ohio High School Athletic Association boys basketball tournament.

Accepting the award on Young’s behalf were his widow, Nancy; his two daughters, Megan and Amy, and their families; brother, Matt and family; and Tony Williams, athletic administrator for Fairfield Local Schools (and former North Adams athletic director).

According to the OHSAA, “The Ohio High School Athletic Association annually selects two individuals as recipients of the Association’s Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Meritorious Service Award for their contributions to the sport of basketball and/or interscholastic athletics.

“The late Dave Young was selected by the OHSAA’s Southeast District Athletic Board to receive a Naismith Award in 2021. Mr. Young was recognized posthumously at the 2022 OHSAA state basketball tournament.”

Young spent 24 years at North Adams and 27 years as a head coach overall in southern Ohio, including at Whiteoak (two seasons) and Minford (one season). He also coached the junior varsity team at Waverly for two seasons and the junior high teams at West Union (four seasons) and East Clinton (one season).

Young led his teams to an overall record of 403-189, including a record of 356-168 at North Adams.

The North Adams Green Devils competed in the State Final Four in 1996 under his leadership, where their lone loss came at the state tournament that season. Along with the state Final Four berth, Young's teams had nine Southern Hills League championships, 17 sectional championships, three district championships, one regional championship and two undefeated seasons.

Young was a nine-time Coach of the Year for the SHL. He was also selected as District Coach of the Year four times and was also voted Division III State Coach of the Year once. He was an Ohio North/South all-star coach and Ohio/Kentucky all-star coach.

His final year as basketball coach was the 2010-11 season, when he retired. He had earned his 400th win as head coach in December of that season. Young passed away Feb. 28, 2012 at the age of 57.
