4 Highland County athletes compete at 2021 OHSAA State Track and Field Championships; Pollard places 7th in 300m hurdles

Friday, June 4 saw four Highland County athletes take part in the 2021 OHSAA Track and Field Championships held for Division II and Division III, as McClain and Whiteoak each had two athletes competing. On Saturday, McClain senior Kerigan Pollard placed in the finals of the 300-meter hurdles.

The Division II state championships were held at Pickerington (North) High School, while the Division III state championships were held at Westerville North High School.

The McClain Tigers had two athletes compete on Friday, with McClain senior Kerigan Pollard qualifying for the 300-meter hurdles finals on Saturday. In the finals of the event, Pollard placed seventh place in the state with a new school record time of 46.22. In the prelims Friday, Pollard finished in seventh place (out of 18 runners) with a time of 46.23.

McClain freshman Lily Barnes was first to compete in the girls discus event for McClain Friday. Barnes finished in 16th place in her state debut out of 18 competitors. Barnes had a throw of 108-11 feet (33.19m) in flight one of the event. 

Genève Baril also qualified for state in the 3200-meter race as she recorded a third-place time of 11:58.91 at the Division II regional event on May 29. She had to return to Canada and did not compete in the state meet.

For the Whiteoak Wildcats, in the boys long jump event for Division III, senior Nick Bailey finished in 14th place out of 18 competitors with a distance of 19-8.25 (6.00m) in flight one of the event.

Bailey also competed in the 100-meter dash on Friday, and in the prelims he finished in 18th place at 11.63 as 18 runners took part in the three-flight event.

WHS junior Lydia Kittner competed in the girls 400-meter dash, finishing in 13th place out of 18 competitors with a time of 1:01.71.
