25 Highland County athletes qualify for track regionals in Division III

Highland County will be very well represented at regionals this year, as the performance from the Division III SE District Track and Field Championships left the boys and girls from Fairfield and Whiteoak in the Top 4 of various events.
The Lions boys track and field team were the district runners-up (South), scoring 106 points, while Whiteoak was fifth overall with 46 points and Lynchburg-Clay was 11th place with 15 points.
For the girls, Fairfield finished in seventh place with 35 points, and Whiteoak totaled 22 points for 10th place. Event finishers in the Top 4 qualified for regionals.
The girls events saw Fairfield’s 4x800-meter relay team of Morgan Richmond, Chloe Barber, Sarah Young, Ciara Colwell finish with a time of 10:55.66 to qualify for regionals.
Also for the Fairfield girls, Ciara Colwell placed fourth in the 1600m run with a time of 5:34.75. Colwell was also second in the 3200m run with a time of 12:44.59.
Blake Adams of Fairfield placed third in the discus with a distance of 116-01, and she was also third in the shot put at 37-02.50.
Whiteoak had Kensley Bailey place in the Top Four in the 100m dash, 200m dash and the long jump event to qualify for regionals. Bailey was second in the 100m dash with a time of 13.27 and followed that with a 200m dash time of 26.77 for second place, and in the long jump, she was third at 16-02.75.
For the boys events (Top 4 finishes advance to regionals), the district runners-up Fairfield Lions were first place in the 4x800m relay race as the team of Matthew Mangus, Brandtson Duffie, Andrew Davis and Bennett Hodson had a time of 8:20.6 for a new district meet record.
Nate Buchanan of FHS was second in the 110m hurdles at 17.47 to move to regionals. In the 1600m run, Fairfield’s Matthew Mangus was first at 4:39.66, while teammate Andrew Davis was third at 4:45.60.
The Lions also qualified for regionals in the 4x100m run as their second place finish of 46.49 was earned by Wyatt Fent, Nick Price, Tristan Victor and Bryce Posey.
Fairfield’s 4x200m relay team of Wyatt Fent, Garrett Spargur, Nick Price and Tristan Victor were fourth with a time of 1:38.95.
In the 800m run, Fairfield’s Brandtson Duffie was first with a time of 1:59.06, and in second place was Bennett Hodson (FHS) with a time of 2:08.21 with both advancing to the regional round.
Mangus also advanced to regionals following a first-place finish in the 3200m run with a time of 9:55.88, and teammate Ethan Davis was third at 10:43.84.
The FHS 4x400m relay team of Duffie, Andrew Davis, Hodson and Brandon Vidourek were first with a time of 3:40.18.
Ethan Saunders of FHS was fourth in the pole vault with a height of 10-00.00.
For Whiteoak, they had regional qualifiers as well, including the 4x200m relay team of Shane Elliott, Nick Bailey, Cody Marion and Josh Graybeal, who were third with a time of 1:38.46.
Whiteoak’s 4x100m relay team of Shane Elliott, Nick Bailey, Cody Marion and Josh Graybeal also placed third at 47.18. Also for Whiteoak, Garrett Miller was third in the 110m hurdles at 18.14.
For the 3200m run Hunter Morgan (WHS) was fourth at 10:52.67.
The 2018 Regionals (Region 11) will be held at Fairfield Union High School in Lancaster on Wednesday, May 23 at 5 p.m. and Friday, May 25 at 5 p.m.
