14 hits lead Fairfield softball to win over Whiteoak

LEESBURG — The Fairfield Lady Lions returned to Southern Hills Athletic Conference play Thursday with a shutout victory over the visiting Whiteoak Lady Wildcats, defending their home field by a 10-0 score in five innings.
Caitlyn Quickle pitched the win for the Lady Lions, throwing her fourth shutout of the season in six starts, allowing only three hits, while striking out nine Lady Wildcat batters. The Fairfield defense committed zero errors in the SHAC win.
FHS head coach Mark Dettwiller was pleased with how his team played on Thursday following the victory.
“Having 14 hits in this game, I’m pretty happy with this win,” Dettwiller said. “The past four or five games, we’ve really hit the ball well and are seeing the ball well. We are starting to get more patient at the plate, and it is coming together.
“We are starting to gel, but defensively we have a couple issues we need to take care of, but I’m pretty happy. Caitlyn threw an outstanding game with nine Ks in five innings … that’s pretty good.”
Whiteoak’s Addison Roberts doubled down the right field line to lead off the game, but Fairfield’s Quickle struck out the next two hitters and ended the inning on a ground ball to shortstop Jobey Hattan.
Fairfield took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, starting with one out, as Hattan singled, Quickle singled and Emmi Vance singled to knock in Hattan and Quickle, then she scored on a throwing error.
Fairfield added to their lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning, and scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Sydney Sanders, Hattan and Quickle drove in the three runs.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Lady Lions completed the scoring and ended the game early with four runs in the fifth inning.
Sydney Hooper walked, Halle Hamilton walked, Hattan smashed a line drive but right at the second baseman for an out, and Quickle drew a walk to load the bases.
Vance doubled to the fence in left centerfield to drive in Hooper and Hamilton. Carly Sanders came off the bench as a pinch hitter to drive in Quickle and Sydney Sanders ended the game with a single to right field.
Leading hitters for the Lady Lions included: Hamilton (2-for-3, three runs), Hattan (1-for-2, SAC bunt, SAC fly, one run, one RBI), Quickle (2-for-2, two runs, one RBI), Vance (3-for-4, two doubles, two runs, four RBI), Sydney Sanders (3-for-4, two RBI), Faith Miller (1-for-3), Hooper (1-for-2, two runs) and Carly Sanders (1-for-1, one RBI).
