Walks, miscues end Post 129 season

CHILLICOTHE — Hillsboro Post 129 out-hit the Post 25 Aces. Post 129 even had just as many errors as the Aces, but the one thing Post 129 didn't do was knock more runs across the plate to get the win, which in turn ended their 2011 summer season in the District 7 tournament.
Hillsboro walked 13 batters and allowed 11 more free bases on passed balls, errors and stolen bases, ending their season 7-4 to the Aces, Monday afternoon at VA Memorial Stadium in the over-90-degree heat.
Post 129 finishes the summer 21-23 overall, 10-6 in the SCOL and 1-2 in the District 7 tournament, defeating Chillicothe Post 757 while also losing to Circleville Post 134.
"We out-hit them but gave them way too many free bases," Hillsboro Post 129 coach Ritchie Butler said. "This was one of those games where everything went wrong at once for us."
The Aces finished with four hits. Post 129 had seven.
Hillsboro started the season at 1-9 in their first 10 games played but ended the season by winning 11 of their final 16 games.
"When we first started putting the team together in late May, we struggled to get close to .500 at first," Butler said. "The guys kept battling and working hard and played well at the end of the season.
"They came together, but we just couldn't get the timely hits when we needed them in the tournament."
Hillsboro reached the .500 mark once this season, after a win against Post 757 at Shaffer Park on July 9.
Entering Monday's game, Hillsboro had won their last four meetings with the Aces, winning the regular season series 4-1, but even an eighth-inning rally wasn't enough to overcome the free bases given to the Aces.
Washington C.H. scored their first run in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Cody Snyder, scoring Colton Sanderson, who doubled to left field to start the Post 25 first. Sanderson finished 2-for-4 with four runs and a walk.
The score stayed 1-0 until the third where the Aces added two more runs, this time scoring the runs on no hits. The Aces added their runs via two walks, a fielder's choice error and a sacrifice fly to right field.
Scoring for the Aces were Deskins Campbell and Sanderson, who each walked in the inning. Campbell scored on the fielding error, and Nathan Carter hit the sacrifice fly to score Sanderson for the 3-0 lead.
Two innings later, the Aces added two more runs, this time getting one hit, and walked three times in the fifth for a five-run lead.
The bottom half of the fifth began with Sanderson reaching on a infield single, followed by Chris Warning drawing a walk. Sanderson, during Warning's and Snyder's at-bat, ruled the base paths by taking second, third and home on three passed balls. Warning, who walked, also scored on a passed ball.
Hillsboro cut the Aces' lead to four runs in the top of the sixth with Ian Adams doubling to lead off the inning. He moved to second and went to third on a ground out by Corey Walker. Adams scored on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Tucker Hughes.
The score stayed 5-1 until the top of the eighth, including a seventh inning where Hillsboro left the bases loaded. In the eighth, Hillsboro scored three runs, cutting the Aces' lead to 5-4.
Walker opened the eighth with a single to right field. Hughes followed with a walk, and Camp (2-for-4) hit an RBI single to centerfield, scoring Walker. After Hughes scored, Camp took home on a squeeze play, as the ball went to the backstop for the third run of the inning. All three runs were scored with one out, and Hillsboro attempted a second squeeze play but were caught out at home.
"It took us awhile to get started, but we did score some runs late," Butler said. "I got a little greedy with the second squeeze play, and it ran us out of the inning. We hit the ball hard but hit it right to them."
The rally by Hillsboro didn't last long, with the Aces scoring twice in the bottom of the eighth with Tyler Spears and Sanderson scoring runs. Batting them in were Snyder and Brett Starkey on consecutive walks.
In the eighth, the Aces scored two runs on no hits and five walks, loading the bases.
The win went to Post 25's Tyler Penwell, who pitched seven innings. He allowed one run on five hits, one walk and two hit batters. He finished the day with five strikeouts. Finishing the game for the Aces were Chance Therrien and Warning, who got the save.
The loss was charged to Tyler Campbell. Campbell pitched five complete innings and to one batter in the sixth. Campbell allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits and seven walks. Campbell struck out two.
Pitching in relief was Casey Jordan, who went 2 2-3 innings. Jordan allowed two runs on five walks and no hits. He struck out four. Zach Uhl pitched the remainder of the game, allowing one walk and no hits or runs.
"We just seemed a step slow today, could be due to the heat, or playing 18 innings yesterday, who knows," Butler said. "We just didn't execute today, and the ball just wouldn't fall for us."
Hillsboro will be losing seven players due to age requirements. Those players are Brady Camp, Cody Shaver, Jacob Dillon, Ian Adams, Tyler Campbell, Tucker Hughes and Zach Uhl.
