Tiger wrestling gains 18th team win of season

On Saturday, Jan. 22 the McClain wrestling team competed in a tri-match against host West Carrollton and National Trail.
The Tigers opened the evening with an overwhelming victory, 42-6, with National Trail winning only one match, and that was by their Division III state-ranked heavyweight.
Their next opponent was the host West Carrollton Pirates. The Pirates are a Division I team that competes in the GWOC league, which is a very competitive wrestling league.
Not counting forfeits, there were five matches contested, with the Pirates taking three victories to the Tigers' two. Counting the forfeits, the final score was West Carrollton 46, McClain 20.
This puts the Tigers' season dual meet record at an even 9-9, and their overall record at 18-17.
Individually, four local grapplers won both matches: Coty Barnhart (125), Steven Barber (152), Gary Ryan (189) and Jake Branham (215). Steven Barber also went over the 20-win mark on the season; he is currently 21-6. Going 1-1 on the night were: Cody Black (135), Joe Unger (160) and Joe Barnhart (171).

On Wednesday, Jan. 19, the McClain wrestling team traveled to Madison-Plains High School to compete in a South Central Ohio League tri-match along with Clinton-Massie.
The night opened with the defending SCOL champion Falcons dismantling the Eagles with a score in the seventies for the Falcons and 10 points for the Golden Eagles.
The Tigers took to the mats against the Falcons in the second match. Despite hard-fought battles, the Tigers won just one match.
Joe Unger (160) pinned his opponent in the second period.
The final score of the match was Clinton-Massie 72, McClain 6.
With the Tigers standing at 0-3 in the league tri-match events, they needed to win against the Golden Eagles.
Steven Barber (152) opened up for the Tigers with a pin in the first period. Unger followed that with an identical result. McClain's Joe Barnhart (171), Gary Ryan (189) and Brandon Davis (285) all followed with forfeit victories.
The Eagles received a forfeit at (112). McClain's Coty Barnhart (125) received a forfeit. Madison-Plains won by pin in the 135 pound class.
In the last match, it was Madison Plains receiving a forfeit at (140). The final score was McClain 36, Madison-Plains 18.
