Stranded runners cost Post 129 in opening district game

CHILLICOTHE — In their first game in exactly one week, Hillsboro Post 129 stranded runners in scoring position on numerous occasions, costing them in their opening District 7 game Sunday morning.
In a game that was scoreless through five innings, a four-run sixth by Circleville Post 134 and one insurance run added in the eighth proved to be more than enough to force Hillsboro in the loser's bracket, with Hillsboro falling 5-0 to the Panthers of Circleville at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe.
The loss puts Hillsboro (20-22) one game away from elimination in the district tournament, and they won't have much time to rest with Post 129 facing Chillicothe Post 757 at 5 p.m. today. The winner will play again Monday at 1:30 p.m.
Hillsboro's loss was also counted as a league loss, putting them 10-6 overall this season in SCOL play. They split the season series with Circleville at 2-2. In all four games against each other this season, the losing team was held scoreless.
The inning that eventually put the game out of reach for Post 129 was a five-hit, four-run sixth inning by Circleville. The final Post 134 run was scored in the eighth on a double, as the runner who scored reached on a throwing error.
Post 129 left four runners stranded at third base and a total of seven runners stranded for the game.
Hillsboro's first opportunity to get on the scoreboard came in the first inning with Ian Adams sending the first pitch of the game to left field for a double. He took third on a passed ball but was stranded there on three straight outs by the next three batters.
Leaving runners at third proved to be a pattern for Hillsboro, happening again in the top of the second. Brady Camp raced to first on a line drive to left field. He took second and third bases on a passed ball with two outs, but he was left standing at third on a ground out to end the inning.
Tucker Hughes (2-for-4) led off the fourth with a base hit in the gap between third base and the shortstop, but a double play and ground out ended the inning.
